Springfield Receives Same Amount of State Aid as Last Year

Amount holds steady after $450,000 cut.

Springfield will receive the same amount of aid from the state as it did in 2010.

In late February the state government announced Springfield would receive $1,753,357 in Consolidated Municipal Property Tax Relief, the same as the township received in 2010.

The 2010 amount was a $450,737 drop from what the Township received in 2009, part of $359 million cut in aid to municipalities across the state by then newly elected New Jersey Chris Christie.

Springfield Township Administrator Anthony Cancro said that he was pleased aid wasn’t cut again this year.

“We were pleased the amount wasn’t reduced,” Cancro said.

Cancro said he wasn’t surprised that the number was kept steady, as many in the New Jersey Municipal Management Association believed before the numbers were announced that state aid would be frozen across the board. Also, Cancro said, Christie implied in his annual budget address that the numbers would be frozen.

With the numbers steady, Springfield will not need to dip into surplus funds to cover costs. Cancro said the administration is still working on the budget, which he said would be ready in about two or three weeks.
