Springfield's First Same-Sex Marriage Held on Sunday

Longtime couple Joe Meehan and Sam Rodriguez were married by Committeeman Ziad Andrew Shehady.

Springfield Township Committeeman Ziad Andrew Shehady officiated at Springfield’s first same-sex marriage Sunday morning.

Couple Joe Meehan and Sam Rodriguez, together for 20 years, have spent 18 of them living in Springfield. 

The marriage is the 26th Shehady has presided over but his first same-sex ceremony and the first in Springfield's history. The committeeman added that Meehan and Rodriguez are his friends, making the occasion that much more special.
