Learn More About Springfield's Electricity Purchase

Jersey Energy Group will undertake an extensive education campaign for Springfield electric customers over the next 60 days, according to the township.

Springfield residents are invited to the first of two town hall meetings to learn more about the Township Committee's decision to pursue the purchase of less expensive electricity through an auction process under a state law called Energy Aggregation. The meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Town Hall, located at 100 Mountain Ave.

The Township has hired Jersey Energy Group (JEG) to act as an energy aggregator to establish an energy aggregation program to purchase electricity for residential and non-residential customers in Springfield, according to Township Administrator Anthony Cancro. The bulk or aggregated price for the customer base in Springfield “will increase the likelihood of lower electricity rates,” according to the state law.

JEG will mount an extensive education campaign for Springfield electric customers over the next 60 days, according to the Township. The auction will take place after the education process is completed, and if auction rates are lower than customers are currently paying for Jersey Central Power & Light electricity, the Township will authorize a contract for a set period of time.

Those customers who already have a third party electric provider will not be affected by the energy aggregation program, according to the Township, which stated that JEG will work with Princeton Public Affairs Group to ensure a thorough and comprehensive outreach program to inform and educate Springfield’s electric customers.

A second town hall meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10.
