YMCA and Township Negotiating Over Lease

YMCA said to be looking for rent reduction.

For the past two months, Springfield and the Summit Area YMCA have been negotiating terms over YMCA’s lease at the .

Public details about the negotiations have been scarce, with both the YMCA and Springfield officials declining to comment. Government meeting agendas have listed the negotiations as occurring during the Committee’s closed executive sessions in February and March.

When contacted, representatives of the Summit Area YMCA, the umbrella organization that includes the Springfield branch, confirmed that negotiations were ongoing and declined to elaborate other than to say more information would be available in coming weeks.

The YMCA pays $12,000 a month to use the space, which includes several exercise rooms, a basketball court, locker and shower facilities and more. In public comments, officials have indicated that the YMCA is looking to pay less.

“They are paying $12,000 a month,” Springfield Deputy Mayor David Amlen said at a Township Committee meeting. “We would like that to continue. They do not.”
