April 7th is World Health Day

World Health Day is celebrated on 7th of April every year to mark the anniversary of the founding of the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1948.

Each year a theme is selected for World Health Day that highlights a priority area of concern for WHO. This year’s theme is high blood pressure. People get high blood pressure by consuming too many salty foods. You can’t always tell which foods are high in salt content just by tasting them. Your palate is accustomed to certain tastes. What tastes salty to you may not taste salty to someone else. Foods that are traditionally salty are meats such as bacon and salami, condiments such as ketchup and mayonnaise, pickles, and breakfast cereals. When in doubt, check the food label and look for the sodium content.  The recommended daily intake of salt is 1500 milligrams.

High blood pressure affects one in three people. Having high blood pressure for an extended period of time can cause many health complications. High blood pressure is a silent killer because most people do not experience symptoms until it’s too late. For more information please visit http://www.who.int/world-health-day/en/
