Oh No! I just got into a car accident

Getting into a car accident could be one of the most scary unexpected events for new drivers.

Getting into a car accident could be one of the most scary unexpected events for new drivers.

Here are some tips from Travelers to follow if you are in an accident:

  • Move out of the way of traffic, and turn on your hazard lights.
    • ****We would recommend not moving it unless it causes harm. Please take a picture before moving the vehicle (if it is safe to do so).
  • Call the police, even if it’s a minor accident. If someone is injured, call 911. If there is a fire, call the fire department.
  • If you can, get the injured person’s name, contact info, and a description of their injury.
  • Do not talk about the accident to anyone except the police and your insurance company.
  • Make sure you get the other drivers’ information. Make sure you write down their license plate #s.
    • At most you will need the other driver’s: Name, License #, Work phone # and home telephone #, their license plate #, their insurance company name and policy #
  • Try to get the name, address and telephone # of any witnesses. Most likely the police will do this.
  • Get the Police Officer’s Name, Precinct, Badge #, Report # and if a ticket was issued to you or the other driver. This can all be found in the police report.
  • Record the date of the accident, time, place of the accident (street name, city and state)
  • Be safe out there!
