Dayton Evacuated Again Wednesday Due to Smoke in Cafeteria

Brick facade work has been halted until the contractor can fix the problem.

Jonathan Dayton High School students were evacuated for the second this week Wednesday morning due to smoke in the cafeteria stemming from work that is being done on the building's brick facade.

"We had to evacuate the building today at approximately 9:45 a.m. due to smoke in a cafeteria closet," Dayton Principal Elizabeth Cresci wrote in an email to parents.  "The students were evacuated to the back parking lot, where they were assembled for about 30 minutes, after which they were moved to the main gym.

"Students returned to their regular instructional day at approximately 10:30. Our students and staff were wonderfully patient and cooperative in the situation."

Cresci explained that much like Monday, no one was in danger. Work on the building's brick facade, which was deemed to be the cause of the smoke, has been halted until the contractor can remedy the issue, she added.

"I am hopeful that today's disruption will be the last due to this contractor issue," Cresci wrote.
