Dayton's JSA Gets Out the Vote

Students make calls to remind voters of school election.

"Democracy is not a spectator sport."

That's the slogan of the Junior State of America, an organization dedicated to student civic involvement and political involvement.  Tuesday night, students in Jonathan Dayton's chapter of JSA picked up their phones in an annual effort to "get out the vote" in anticipation of .

Students made phone calls on their personal phones to every district family with parents who are registered to vote, reminding them about the often forgotten election and the impact its results have on the school district and township.

Many left voice messages, some faced hang-ups, and others listened to the responses of more receptive voters.

"The guy I just hung up with said he wouldn't have gone to vote had I not just called," said Dayton senior Kevin Kirk, one of the students making calls.
