The Great Books Discussion Group, Springfield Library - Montesquieu: Principles of Government

A Great Books Discussion Group of Springfield Library, is meeting to discuss Montesquieu: Principles of Government.  This group will meet on today at 10 am.  The Great Books Discussion Group, which meets on the third Thursday of each month, will be meeting to investigate various aspects of Montesquieu's work.  The Great Books compilation may be purchased for $25 at the Circulation Desk.  The discussion group welcomes new members.  Participants are invited to come to any or all of the sessions.

Charles-Louis de Secondat de Montesquieu was born in 1689 to a wealthy and noble family; he inherited a barony when he was seven.  After graduating law at the University of Bordeaux, he practiced in Paris for several years then became deputy president of the regional court of Bordeaux.  In 1721, he published the Parisian Letters , a witty critique of French society and institutions that made his name.  He was elected to the Academie Francaise in 1727.  His The Spirit of the Laws was published in 1748 and went through twenty two editions. Despite its popularity, the work irked some philosophers and clerics who wanted it banned.  He died in 1755 in Paris.
