The Great Books Discussion Group, Springfield Library - Homer: The Iliad

A Great Books Discussion Group of Springfield Library, is meeting to discuss Homer: The Iliad.  This group will meet on Thursday, February 16, 2012 at 10 a.m.  The Great Books Discussion Group, which meets on the third Thursday of each month, will be meeting to investigate various aspects of Ibsen’s work.  The Great Books compilation may be purchased for $25 at the Circulation Desk.  The discussion group welcomes new members.  Participants are invited to come to any or all of the sessions.

Homer is thought to have lived in Asia Minor sometime before 700 B.C. but almost nothing is known about his life, and even his authorship of the Iliad and the Odyssey are in dispute.  Scholars believe that both were originally sung aloud by minstrel poets.  Herodotus compiled a biography of him, but it is considered unreliable.  Homer’s places of birth and death are unknown, although many cities have claimed the honor.

The program is free and open to all.  The Springfield Free Public Library is located at 66 Mountain Avenue, Springfield.  For additional information, call 973-376-
4930.  All are welcome.
