Letters from Springfield Principals on Costume Ban

Below are the letters sent to parents informing them of new rules on Halloween costumes.

Hillary Corburn and David Rennie, the principals of and elementary schools, sent the letter to parents regarding Halloween costumes in schools.

Dear Parents/Guardians:

My main goal as your child’s principal is maximizing instructional time each day of the school year. While we celebrate several events during the school year, there is no day that cuts into instructional time like Halloween.

In an effort to minimize the interruption of instruction, and recognizing that students have ample time to celebrate the holiday in costume after school, costumes will no longer be permitted in school on Halloween. In recent years, James Caldwell School students have enjoyed educational games and healthy snacks during end-of-day Halloween celebrations. We will continue with these celebrations on October 31.

Our Halloween Safety Assembly, conducted by the Springfield Police Department, will also be held in the afternoon of the 31st. This program provides helpful safety tips for children while trick-or-treating that evening.

I appreciate your cooperation with this initiative.

Sincerely,

David Rennie
