Selection of New Member on BOE Agenda

The Board of Ed. will appoint a replacement to fill the open seat

The Board of Education will nominate and select a person to fill the seat vacated by Donato Circelli at its regular meeting tonight.

The suggested motion on this evening's agenda reads: "I nominate [name] for the office of Board Member of the Springfield Board of Education to fill the vacant seat until the next Board of Education election, April 2010, and to take effect January 11, 2010."

At its last meeting, the Board interviewed six residents who applied formally with letters of interest to fill the seat, after the governing body announced it would accept applications from those interested in replacing Circelli.

The eight sitting board members vetted the candidates, asking questions of each on topics including technology, negotiations, and finance.  The candidates also had an opportunity to present information about themselves, including their backgrounds, experience, and ideas.

Circelli also left the position of Vice President of the Board open when he resigned.  At its Nov. 16 meeting, the Board of Education selected Irwin Sablosky to fill the role.

The new board member will serve out the four months remaining in Circelli's term, and may run for a full three-year term in April if so desired.

The Board of Education meets tonight for its regular meeting at 7:30 p.m. in the Jonathan Dayton High School Instructional Media Center.
