Walton School Kicks Off '100th Day of School' Food Drive

Walton PTA collects for Lily's Pantry throughout the week.

Happy 100th day of school, Springfield!

To mark the occasion, the PTA is holding their annual 100th day food drive. The PTA is collecting non-perishable food items throughout the week. The collected food will be donated to Springfield charitable food service Lily's Pantry, which distributes food to soup kitchens and shelters in Union and Hudson County.

This year marks the eighth anniversary of the food drive, which Lily’s Pantry founder Anthony DiMurro said has been a steady annual source of donations.

Parents are sending their kids to school with one food item, with children from different grades asked to bring in specific types of food. Students in pre-k are bringing in pasta, pasta sauce and "Chef Boyardee" style can goods. Kindergarten students are bringing in beans, canned vegetables and fruits. First graders are bringing in soups and second graders are bringing canned meats such as chicken, tuna, sardines and ham

Walton PTA President Staci Rosenstock said that if each student brings in one thing, the school will be able to donate over 600 items.
