Springfield Celebrates Small Business Saturday

Support the small businesses that make the community special.

Springfield merchants celebrated Small Business Saturday.

Created by American Express in 2010, the annual event, celebrated between Black Friday and Cyber Monday, is now in its fourth year and serves as a way to support the small businesses that help make communities special.

According to the Small Business Saturday Insights Survey, consumers who were aware of Small Business Saturday in 2012 spent $5.5 billion with independently-owned businesses that day.

Committeeman Ziad Andrew Shehady served as an American Express Shop Small "Neigborhood Champion" and, with the help of Springfield Chamber of Commerce Chairman Scott Seidel and Springfield Business Improvement District Chairman Mike Scalera, delivered promotional materials in advance of the day.

"I signed up to help promote the local businesses for Shop Small Saturday because we have a lot of great merchants, retailers and service providers in town that should be recognized and receive more attention," Shehady said. "American Express provided me with several boxes of promotional material that I made available to members of the Springfield Chamber of Commerce and Springfield Business Improvement District."
