Dayton Senior Signs Letter of Intent to Wrestle for Old Dominion

Joe Balboni accepted an athletic scholarship.

Jonathan Dayton High School senior Joe Balboni accepted an athletic scholarship and signed a letter of intent Wednesday morning to continue his wrestling career at Old Dominion University next fall.

Dayton athletic director Lance Jacobs commended Balboni for the "tremendous" amount of hard work that led to this achievement.

Jacobs said he was very proud to see the fruits of Balboni's labor come to fruition.

"This is an avenue for him to get a great education and continue his wrestling," Jacobs said.

Flanked by his proud parents, Brenda and John, Balboni thanked them, his coach, Scott Weaver, Dayton Principal Elizabeth Cresci and his fellow athletes, for their unwavering support.

Balboni said he visited Old Dominion in September and had an opportunity to meet the Monarchs wrestling coach and team.

"It was a great atmosphere," he said. "I had a good experience and I liked the team and the coaches. I'm really excited."

Balboni credits hard work for his success.

"Never quit," he said. "Always keep going; keep working at it."

Cresci and Board of Education member Jacqueline Shanes both told Balboni how proud they are of his academic and athletic accomplishments.
