Dayton Varsity Tennis Wrap-Up: Weeks Five And Six

A look back at the last two weeks of Dayton Tennis

Alright Dayton Tennis fans, here's your bi-weekly fix.

Week five started with a match against Roselle Park, who were shut out by David Pilmenstein and Dmitry Suvorov at 2nd and 3rd singles. Week 3 MVP Ross Konesky was forced to retire during the second set due to an injury to his left calf. Jason Condon played with JV player Zack Kadish and Kadish proved himself an asset to the duo as they conquered Roselle Park 6-2, 6-1.

The next match of the week was against Rahway, and again Dayton dominated the match with a 5-0 victory. Dayton's singles team, Dan Karlin, Matt Neubauer and David Pilmenstein, only allowed Rahway one of the combined 37 games played by the singles team. Both doubles teams, Brandon Helfand and Zac Corey and Jason Condon and Dmitry Suvorov, won their sets with a 6-2, 6-2 victory for each Dayton team.

The third match of the week was a difficult loss to New Providence. In 1st singles, Dan Karlin was forced to retire during his second set due to illness. Matt Neubauer played a close match and when he needed to pull out all the stops he was the only one who came out victorious. The greatest match to watch was Jason Condon and Dmitry Suvorov's. They played a great first set and won 6-4. During the second set, they took a hard defeat in a 6-0 end. In the third set, it all came down to the last game. They played their hearts out, but in the end it just wasn't enough.

The final match of the week was at Dayton against Summit. As in the Roselle Park match-up, the Dayton squad easily strode to victory. The singles team, Dan Karlin, Matt Neubauer and Ross Konesky, who had just recovered from his injury to his left calf, won with ease. The doubles team of Zac Corey and Brandon Helfand were unstoppable. They won the first set 6-2, but lost the second set 3-6. In the third set, they were neck and neck with Summit and it all came down to a tiebreaker game. Zac and Brandon came out victorious in the tiebreaker with a 10-8 victory.

Week 6 was a pretty hectic week, with rain delays and rescheduled matches.

The first match of the week was against Bridgewater-Raritan. The 3-2 score was close, but Dayton just didn't have what it took. Dan Karlin and Matt Neubauer played tough opponents that played hard right until the very end. Ross Konesky had a tough loss, 6-2, 6-2, and the doubles teams just couldn't get it together in time to win.

The next match was against Scotch-Plains. Dayton was able to come out victorious with a close match at 3-2.  Matt Neubauer played one of the tougher matches that went to a third set, but he ultimately came out on top with a 6-4 victory. David Pilmenstein and Dmitry Suvorov played a close match, ending in a tiebreaker game in the second set that ended 7-1 in Dayton's favor.

The Livingston match was a disappointing loss for Dayton. Every player put up a good fight, but in the end Livingston was just an overall strong team and it showed in the score of the match. This most interesting part of this match was not even the match itself, but a particular problem Dmitry Suvorov was having with his equipment. Dmitry told Patch, "I broke, like, four racquets. The first one my string popped and the second racquet broke when one of the player from Livingston served. As soon as the ball hit my racquet, the frame of my racquet bent; it bent! When I got a third and fourth racquet had strings pop almost immediately, I didn't know what was going on, that's unheard of!"

The last match of Week six was an easy win over Oratory Prep, even in the past Oratory has proven themselves as weak opponents. Dan Karlin, Matt Neubauer, and Ross Konesky destroyed their opponents with ease. Zac Corey and Brandon Helfand also played a great match, but sometimes it just isn't enough. Jason Condon and Dmitry Suvorov dominated the first set 6-2 and ended the match with a 6-3 victory.

Week five's Patch MVP is actually a doubles team. These two guys play together seamlessly. They have always made a great partnership, but Week five is where they shined. Even when the odds were against them, they played hard and were rewards, and that is why Week 5's Patch MVP is the doubles team of Zac Corey and Brandon Helfand.

Week six's MVP is one of the best players I have seen. Even when the opponent seems better, he plays better and rises to the challenge. In the Bridgewater-Raritan match, he was one of the two people from Dayton to win. He always is a great player and a great person to be around, and that is why Week 6's Patch MVP is Matt Neubauer.
