Dayton's Finest Student-Athletes In Their Own Words: Gabby DeFronzo

The star pitcher reflects and looks to the future.

As the school year is officially behind us and the 2011 graduating class heads off into the real world, let’s take a look at what is on the horizon for some of JDHS’s finest student-athletes – in their own words.

This week’s installment features softball flamethrower Gabby DeFronzo.

What’s it like now that you’re officially done being a JDHS Bulldog?
It doesn't feel real yet. I feel like I will be back again for another season.

What was your best memory – team-wise -- from your senior season?
The Brearley game, which was my first game back. I didn't know if I would be pitching again. [Ed. Note: DeFronzo suffered a serious shoulder injury in 2010 and missed all of her junior season, putting her senior season in some doubt.]

What was your best personal memory or achievement during you senior season?
Being able to come back and play again. I didn't know if I ever would be able to. I also had a pretty successful season, especially at the plate (.391), so I am pretty content with my comeback.

What will you miss most about donning the blue and orange?
The people involved, such as [trainer Ike] Spangler, [Athletic Director Lance] Jacobs, [head basketball and assistant football coach Bob] Martin, and [head softball coach Wendy] Saladino.

Who was the most influential person in your life, on or off the playing field?
Mr. Spangler. He helped me get through my shoulder impairment. Without him, I would never have been playing again. He helped me to stay motivated and keep working hard. [Also] my mom and dad as well because they always supported me, listened to me complain about my rehab frustrations, and took care of me after my surgery.

What do you have planned for the summer?
Finding a job somewhere...hopefully.

If you’re going to college, will you still play your respective sport or is this it for you athletically?
I chose not to continue playing softball.

If you are college-bound, what will you plan to study in college? If not college-bound what are your plans in the workforce.
Accounting.

Where do you see yourself in five years?
I will still be in school in five years, obviously.
