Fourth Annual Run For Life a Success

Race won by visiting New Yorker; two Springfield residents cracked top 25.

Manhattan's David Wurtz, 25, was 20 seconds better than anyone Sunday morning at the fourth annual Millburn-Short Hills Chapter of the Red Cross 5K Run/Walk for Life.

Coming in a 17:14, the Long Island native cruised in, running the course for the first time today. "I really liked the course, especially downhill," Wurtz said. "It was really pretty with the snow on the ground. It was very serene."

The race ran from Millburn's Public Library through South Mountain Reservation.

He ran the course with his wife Dominique Wurtz, 24, who came in 34th place at 21:28. The fastest female in the race was Lebanon's Clarissa Modde, 13, who clocked in at 20:19, coming in 16th place.

Raymond Bernaz of Springfield came in fourth. Other township racers included Shereen Berna, who placed 25th overall and Raghavende Velakoti, who placed 187th.

All money raised at the event supports the local Red Cross' programs. Despite last night's snowfall, the race had a record turnout, drawing 400 participants and another record of 330 finishes, topping the previous record of 279.

"I'm very excited. It's a gorgeous day. We couldn't have hoped for a better day," said event coordinator Annette Romano.
