Single Set of Bleachers at Turf Field 'Not an Oversight,' Committeeman Says

Portable bleachers will be used 'as needed' at turf field, Mayor David Amlen said. A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.

Questions regarding the lone set of bleachers at Jonathan Dayton High School's artificial turf field were addressed at Tuesday's Township Committee meeting.

After Mayor David Amlen announced that a ribbon cutting ceremony will be held at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the new athletic field, resident Bob Groder said he noticed upon driving past the field that a second set of smaller bleachers had been erected at the field and asked if they would remain for the season.

Amlen said the bleachers would be "brought out as needed for different events." Committeeman Ziad Andrew Shehady said he wanted to address this question as a lot of people have asked, "well, what, did they forget about the bleachers on the other side?"

"No, it wasn't an oversight," Shehady stated. "A lot of thought went into this but due to the limitations of the location, space restrictions would have either necessitated narrowing the field and thereby limiting the activities that can take place on there, narrowing the other side and the concession stand and a whole number of things and running into environmental concerns to do with displaying impervious surfaces. So that's why there were no permanent bleachers installed and the concession was mobile bleachers."
