Springfield Storm 10U Girls' Softball Squad win Second Straight Championship

The squad defeated Chatham 9-0 on July 26 to capture crown

Ladies and gentlemen, may I present the undefeated Springfield Storm, the girls' 10U softball team and two-time defending Parkway Invitational Softball League champions.

The Storm, led by second-year head coach Jim Wilson and assistants Jim Lau and Anthony Matarazzo, competes in the Union/Middlesex County travel softball program and capped an undefeated league season with a 9-0 home victory over Chatham in the championship on July 26 at Chisholm Field.

Pitcher Holly Wilson pitched a no-hitter for the Storm in the title game.

"From last year's team, only four of the girls returned as the rest moved up to the 12U team," said Wilson. "We were seeded number one going into the playoff round, but unfortunately lost our first game. The positive that came out of that was it got the girls to really focus and try harder, which propelled them to win their final five regular league games and the championship."

The Storm is a competitive fast-pitch softball league for girls ages 9 through 18. The league has over 80 teams in four counties in Central Jersey with four age groups (10U, 12U, 14U and High School). The 10U squad competes in the National East Division comprised of teams from Mountainside, Chatham, Woodbridge, North Edison, Elmora and Metuchen.

The team finished its season with an 11-0 record in league play and a 13-1-1 overall record. Its lone blemish, a 5-3 setback in the quarterfinals of the Summer Sizzle Tournament to host Woodbridge on July 10.

48 hours later, the Storm responded by routing Woodbridge, 17-2, in conference play.

"With only those four returning players, I wasn't sure how the season was going to turn out. We played some tough competition and faced some excellent pitching," said Wilson. "However, our girls tried hard and learned so much during the season, they were able to get the job done and win games. The coaches are all very proud of them and how far they've come."

Springfield Storm U-10 Championship Roster: Holly Wilson, Amanda Lau, Arianna Griffin, Gabby Petruzella, Kayla Balke, Rachel Valle, Jessica Pica, Christina Boettcher, Megan Brady, Elena Matarazzo, Maggie Phillips, Madeline Beveridge, Emma Taylor, Victoria Delia.
