Cleanliness of Community Pool a Concern, Residents Say

Committeeman suggests establishing a board of trustees.

While Springfield Township committee members said membership has increased at the community pool as was hoped for, they acknowledged that some improvements could be made as more residents use the facility.

At Monday's committee work session meeting, residents said the pool's restrooms and changing areas need to be cleaned more frequently. Pool members also suggested adding activities that would appeal to children within a variety of different age groups.

Committeeman Ziad Andrew Shehady said he'd like to see a board of trustees, similar to the library's, established. As he explained it, the board would be comprised of volunteers who met year-round to consider pool improvements. He also said the board could consider hiring an independent pool director. Shehady expressed frustration that many of these issues had been raised in 2009 and yet still exist. He also noted that the recreation committee's meetings have been reduced to once a quarter from once a month.

Committee members said a resident sent a letter suggesting that the Millburn and Summit pools be visited to provide points of comparison. As the pool is self-sustaining and an important utility within the community, members said more ideas for improving conditions should be explored in September.
