How Healthy Are Springfield's Streams?

Participants in a recent library program assessed the health of one of the Township's waterways.

On Monday, Steven Hruby, AmeriCorps Watershed Ambassador from the Union County Department of Parks & Community Renewal presented a special program at the Springfield Library.

"The participants learned about water issues in NJ, about watershed management, about how the quality of their lives connects to the watershed and how to assess the health of brooks and streams," Springfield library director Susan Permahos said in an email.

The program started with a Power Point presentation in the library, but didn't stay indoors for long. Participants, who wore terrain-appropriate footwear, walked across the street to the stream near the new Chamber of Commerce clock on Wabeno Ave. where they used their new knowledge to collect insects and crustaceans for analysis that was sent back to NJ Department of Environmental Protection.
