The three-alarm fire destroyed much of the home; no injuries were reported.
A three-alarm fire that began in the kitchen area of a home on Barchester Way in Westfield was extinguished after three hours of work by several Union County Fire Departments on Saturday. According to neighbors, the fire began in the kitchen microwave around 1:30 p.m. Two boys, ages 14 and nine, were home at the time but ran out of the house to safety. "When we first arrived we had confirmation that two children were lost inside," said Westfield Fire Chief Robert Buccino. "We began as a search and rescue operation, but once we learned the children were out and safe we switched to suppression. The fire began in the kitchen area and moved laterally across the top of the house." The fire required three ladders and six pumpers, according to …
Funnyman Sasha Baron Cohen is at it again, this time as a flashy, offensive Middle Eastern dictator who comes to the U.S.
Editor's Note — A version of this review originally appeared in Roseville Patch. From the guy who brought us Ali G and Borat comes a new character named General Aladeen — a ruthless dictator from a fictional country in North Africa who is part buffoon, horn dog and ruthless bloodthirsty ruler in "The Dictator." Through a ridiculous set of circumstances, from which I will spare you the details because they are so contrived, Aladeen ends up in New York while his even sillier double is in charge of his country. There are plenty of cameo appearances from big stars to keep things interesting. As for the element of political satire, we get a pretty heavy-handed lecture that borders on being a bit corny. "The Dictator," like so many other …
One winds up on the train tracks, another on a front lawn.
Each week, Patch takes a peek at some of the surprising, shocking and occasionally silly police-related incidents reported throughout New Jersey for "OMGs from NJ PDs." On the Wrong Track: Contrary to popular belief, there is no "wrong side of the tracks." Well, not unless you count the top side. A driver who made a wrong turn wound up on the train tracks paralleling Route 17, leading authorities to shut down New Jersey Transit traffic on the line, according to Hasbrouck Heights Police. It took police about an hour to remove the vehicle from the tracks. We're not sure how long it took onlookers to remove their palms from their faces. Not Quite a Smoking Gun, But Close: You think smoking's bad for you? It's even worse if you're trying to …
It became a publicly-traded company this week and is making billions for its shareholders.
From its humble beginnings as an idea in a Harvard dorm room, to a social media site with an estimated 900 million users worldwide - Facebook has become a huge part of our popular culture. Privately held since 2004, Facebook became a publicly-traded company this week. That means all of its shares will be listed on the NASDAQ stock exchange and sold to the public, though some investors criticized that it was hard to get their hands on the stock. Once trading began, Facebook sold 421 million shares at $38 each and raised an estimated $16 billion in one day, setting records for valuation and volume of first-day trading. Friday's trading set a record for the number of shares sold, 567 million. The company's total valuation is now estimated at $…

A look back at notable goings on in the township in recent days.
On Tuesday, May 15, Zakiyyah Shakoor, 37, of Wilboro was found to have over $50,000 worth of heroin hidden in her car during a routine traffic stop on route 22. Shakoor reportedly broke into tears after officers asked for her license and other motor vehicle papers. Police reportedly found a pound and a half of heroin crammed inside a fast food restaurant paper bag in the car. The Springfield Township Committee are considering making dramatic changes to the township’s board of health. Under the proposed changes, the health committee would be composed of the township committee members and two residents. While officials tout the move as a cost-saving effort, current members of the board of health and township observers characterize the …

Boston-bred comedian discusses being a mom with three kids, wanting to be a guy in her act.
A bit of a storyteller, comedian Kerry Louise likes to talk about her everyday life as the mother of three children and the subsequent need to find time for herself. Louise, who will return to the stage this weekend at Scotty’s, said she likes to switch up her act based on whether she is working a club or a different venue, such as a college. “At Scotty’s, though, I’ll probably see more parents and more people who would have children,” Louise said. “So I would do 70 percent kids stuff and other observational humor I do.” In some of her other material, she discusses growing up as a Catholic, being a woman and husband-vs.-wife sort of material. She met her husband, Tom Cotter, while they were both performing stand-up in Boston in the ‘90s. …
