I am so grateful to the volunteers who went above and beyond to be sure I got my hanging baskets in time for Mother's Day when I missed the delivery! My planters are beautiful and the flats seem to be taking very well.   more ›

St. James First Graders Win Governor's Jefferson Award

Students made fleece blankets for patients at Trinitas Hospital in Elizabeth.

The first grade students of St. James the Apostle School were awarded the Governor's Jefferson Award for Youth Service at a ceremony held on May 12 at the Newark Museum. Along with their teacher Stacy West and class aide Terri Herlihy, the first graders initiated a collaborative service project for Trinitas Hospital in Elizabeth, NJ. Partnering with the Home School Association, St. James students in grades 2 through 8, the school's Girl and Cub Scout Troops, and classes at Hillside Avenue School in Cranford, the students made fleece blankets for patients aged 4 through 17 residing at the hospital. The blankets were Christmas gifts to the patients, to brighten up their rooms and to provide warmth. The students raised and contributed money …

Springfield Schools Send Home Safety Tips

List culled form National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

Following the report of a stranger danger incident earlier this month at Sandmeier school, the Springfield school administration sent out a series of safety tips for parents on the school’s listserv. The message was created by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, a children's safety advocacy group co-founded by former America’s Most Wanted host John Walsh. The list is broken up into several sections and mainly concerns common sense advice with the overarching message being that both parents and children should stay informed. The “home” section advises teaching children their full names, address and home telephone number as well as their parents’ contact information. It also advises that children learn how and when to use…

Should Public School Districts Pay for Private School Busing?

The state requires public school districts to pay the transportation costs for students attending private and parochial schools.

New Jersey public school districts have been paying to bus parochial and private school students for years. A report in The Asbury Park Press puts the annual cost at $77 million a year for about 90,000 students of religious and other private schools, money that comes out of local budgets funded by property taxes. According to the paper, districts are required "to spend up to $884 on transportation for each student attending a private school, be it on a school bus or a parent driving the child to class." The state is one of only a handful that pay for private-school busing, with 34 banning all public funding for private schooling. Patch wants to know what you think. Offer your thoughts in the comments section below.

In Summit, the town is not required to pay for busing private school students because it doesn't offer busing for the public school students. But, as others have argued, we're saving the town plenty sending our kids to private school. As taxpayers, it seems only fair we receive the bus subsidy. In addition to the cost of teachers and staff, imagine all the additional school building capacity the …   more ›

POLL: Are Student Secrets a Proper Test Question?

Some parents in New Jersey weren't happy with one of the questions on the NJASK test.

The NJ ASK standardized testing is designed to test the general knowledge of state kindergarten through eighth grade students, but this year for some third graders, it also tested their ability to keep a secret. According to the Asbury Park Press, students in New Jersey reported to their parents that they were asked to reveal a secret in an essay portion of the test, and reveal why the secret was hard to keep. New Jersey Department of Education Spokesman Justin Barra confirmed with the Asbury Park Press that the "secret" question was on the test, but said that it was not a part of the students' scores. But some parents, including Richard Goldberg of Marlboro, whose 9-year-old twins told him about it, said he thinks the question was …

This is absolutely improper. It puts children in an awkward position. Because some children may feel uncomfortable in answering, there is a question of how valid the question is.   more ›
