Springfield's Fire Department is composed of both professional and volunteer firefighters. Their "Career Division"…More consists of the chief, deputy chief, four captains and 19 firefighters. The recently built Fire Headquarters is staffed 24-hours a day, seven days a week with at least three professional firefighters on duty at all times.
According to statistics on the department's website, Springfield Firefighters responded to 1,596 incidents in 2008. The department says its typical response time is between 3 and 5 minutes from receipt of the call.
All professional personnel are trained in CPR and hold state and other certifications in a variety of areas. Rank and file firefighters are members of the New Jersey Firemen's Mutual Benevolent Association Local 57.
The department has two fire engines and a number of other emergency vehicles, plus an antique fire truck. James Sanford is the chief.
