Emergency responders assisted in evening accident.
The Springfield First Aid Squad was called to Milltown Road for a motor vehicle accident on Wednesday, Dec. 12. At approximately 11:30 p.m. a car struck a pole. The driver told responders he lost control of the vehicle while trying to avoid a deer in the road. The First Aid Squad crew called in off-duty members to staff its second ambulance to assist at the scene and transport two individuals to a nearby trauma center. Squad members said the injuries did not appear to be serious. Springfield Police officers also responded to the scene. Wreck reportedly occurred at approximately 8 a.m.
A reader sent in photos of an accident at the Union-Springfield border on Morris Avenue that occurred today at 8 a.m. According to the witness, a NJ Transit bus was involved and bottlenecked traffic into Springfield all the way to General Greene Shopping Center. Despite the glass scattered from the accident, cars reportedly wiggled around the accident to get through.

Springfield First Aid Squad transported driver to hospital following crash.
An early morning two-car motor vehicle accident in the middle of Springfield landed one driver in the hospital and resulted in significant damage to public property. Springfield Fire Chief James Sanford said the accident occured at 211 Mountain Avenue, near the intersection of Waverly Avenue. Springfield First Aid Squad volunteer Zachary Sandman said a motorist driving a black sport utility vehicle struck two mail boxes and dislodged both of them and slammed into two telephone poles before his car came to a stop. One of the poles fell into the path of a a second motorist driving in the opposite direction on Mountain Avenue. No life threatening injuries in single vehicle accident.
A dump truck carrying landfill en route to Pennsylvania overturned late this morning on a ramp off of Rte. 24 near the intersection of I-78. The driver sustained minor injuries in the accident. He was taken to the hospital by the Springfield First Aid Squad* and is believed to be in stable condition. Springfield Deputy Fire Chief Carlo Palumbo said that the truck rolled over when its load shifted as the truck took a turn on the ramp. Palumbo said that it was likely that the momentum forced the landfill material to one side of the vehicle, causing the truck to tip over. Police believe they know identity of driver that fled the scene.
Captain David Wayman of the Westfield Police Department has confirmed that a pedestrian who was struck in an accident on North Avenue West Wednesday evening has been pronounced dead at Overlook Hospital in Summit. Another pedestrian also involved in the accident is in serious condition at Univeristy Hospital in Newark after being flown in for treatment via helicopter. Wayman said police received a call about pedestrians being struck in a crosswalk on North Avenue West near Tuttle Parkway around 6:05 p.m. Wednesday. According to Wayman, a man was crossing North Avenue West in the crosswalk. A car stopped for him but he was still struck, Wayman said. Minivan fell into steep embankment.
An automobile accident near a large Springfield housing development came close to tragedy this morning. Through a fortunate sequence of events, there were no significant injuries. Springfield fire fighters who responded to the scene said that a blue minivan unoccupied save for the driver rolled off away from the parking lot at the Lakeside by Briant Park apartment complex at approximately 10 a.m. For reasons yet to be determined, the minivan rolled into a steep embankment that drops about 20 feet into a shallow and rocky creek. Firefighters said the car struck a tree after going over the edge. The force of hitting the tree was enough to bounce the minivan up to the edge of the road. Union City man dies after being thrown off his Harley-Davidson on the state road.
A man riding a Harley-Davidson Motorcycle was killed Thursday on State Road 24 eastbound near Hobart Avenue when he lost control of the motorcycle and was thrown off, sustaining severe head injuries. Edwin Serrano of Union City was traveling eastbound on 24 around 4 p.m. when he came upon traffic congestion, was unable to brake, skidded and the Harley flipped over, throwing him off, said State Police Captain Frank Davis. The report does not specify whether Serrano was wearing a helmet, Davis said. The accident closed the center and left lanes of Route 24 eastbound during the evening rush hour commute.

Car driving wrong way on highway collided with tractor trailer, state police say.
A fatal motor vehicle accident brought I-78 to a halt last night, closing the Westbound express lanes of the highway for hours as emergency services reportedly dealt with a driver found dead on the scene. New Jersey State police said the accident occurred at approximately 2:30 a.m. after a car driving the wrong way on the westbound side of the highway collided with a tractor trailer near exit 49. Two Springfield fire department vehicles responded to the scene. Springfield and Union fire fighters had to cut open the car, a VW Golf, to gain access to the two people trapped inside after the crash. Wire in road has closed off street from traffic.
A weather-related accident has forced the closure of South Springfield Ave. from the Springfield line to the Westfield line in Mountainside. The accident occurred around 10 a.m. and involved a van knocking down a telephone pole. According to Mountainside police captain Richard Oseija, the van not only knocked down the pole with three transformers, causing electric interruption to area homes and businesses. The electrical line is across the roadway. The driver was able to get out of the van. There are no injuries reported. PSE&G is on the scene along with the Mountainside Fire Department.

Car reportedly went over guard rail.
Traffic on Interstate 78 Westbound was at a standstill for much of the morning as emergency services cleared the road following an accident on the highway that left a woman with critical injuries. According to a New Jersey State Police report, 18-year-old Hillside resident Jennifer Cavadas lost control of her blue Toyota Avalon while driving around a curve on Rte 24 near I-78 shortly before 9 a.m. The car drifted off the road to the right, then re-entered the road and careened over all three lanes of traffic before striking and mounting the curbed median separating the highways before stopping at the median between 78 West and East.
