AAA Shares Tips on What to do in a Car Crash

Motorist advocacy group recommends staying calm & carrying on.

The following press release is from AAA.  ------------ Being involved in an auto collision can be an emotional and exhausting experience. Many motorists drive defensively, take driver education courses and prepare for stressful driving situations, but unfortunately vehicle collisions still occur. A driver is responsible for knowing what to do if they are involved in a collision. “Even the most prepared and competent drivers sometimes find themselves involved in a crash,” said Cathleen Lewis, director of Public Affairs for AAA New Jersey Automobile Club. “It does not matter who is at fault, the most important thing to do first is make sure everyone is OK, then seek medical and law enforcement help and know what to do to protect yourself …

Red Light Camera Testing Underway

Cameras installed on intersection of Morris and Maple Aves.

Motorists, take care. The days of rolling through red lights unnoticed are over. Springfield has installed and activated traffic safety cameras to record red light runners in all directions of the intersection of Morris and Maple Avenues, an intersection designated as dangerous by township and New Jersey Department of Transportation officials. A 30-day test period for the cameras went into effect on Wednesday, April 18. Until the testing period ends on May 17, red light cameras will record infractions, but will not issue summonses. Springfield officials have planned to accurately adjust the system to prevent incorrect citations. Summonses will be issued starting May 18. “We’ve identified several critical intersections where disregard of …

Apparently the system works. I got a citation for actually stopping at the intersection, then turned right on red, not sure if I was able to do so because I didn't see a sign addressing the issue. My question is, "Where is the 'no turn on red' posted"? It was certainly NOT visible to me and being unfamiliar with the location, I presumed that I could turn at that intersection after stopping at the…   more ›

Police: Woman Passes Out During Traffic Stop

Springfield police department investigates odd accident.

People drive when they're too tired to get behind the wheel all the time. Maybe it's after a big meal or an all-nighter, but it usually ends up OK. They catch themselves losing control, pull over and re-assess the situation. Maybe they get a coffee, maybe they call a cab or maybe they get a hotel. Whatever. A recent arrest by Springfield's police illustrates one near-worst case scenario possible for this situation; falling asleep at the wheel while a cop is watching. At around 8:45 p.m. on May 14, Springfield police officer Louis Brito stopped a motor vehicle that was driven without headlights. According to a police report, the lights were off because the car had sustained such heavy damage in the front that the lights couldn't work. Also …

Breaking Springfield's Speed Addiction

Township Committee explores traffic calming measures and considers red light cameras.

Tired of squealing tires and speeding cars on Mountain Avenue and elsewhere? Springfield officials are looking at solutions. But be prepared; your days of blowing red lights if no one's looking could soon be through. At their March 9 meeting, Springfield's Township Committee heard from a company interested in installing red light cameras in the town. At that meeting and at their March 23 meeting, the Committee discussed a proposed ordinance that would establish ways that Springfield residents can request that the township install traffic calming measures on Municipal roads. Charles Callari of American Traffic Solutions presented the case for red light cameras. The cameras would be installed at no out of pocket cost to the town. Instead, …
