Opinion: Fact-Checking Mayor Shehady's September

Former Mayor takes issue with Shehady's September Mayor's message, particularly with regards to pension deferral payment.

MOSTLY FALSE In keeping with his policy of making statements that place blame on others and place himself in a favorable light, Mr. Shehady has once again used his political acumen in writing his September message. Anyone who reads the Star-Ledger knows they print a column regarding statements made by New Jersey politicians and rate it on their Truth-O-Meter.  By their definition, a mostly false statement contains an element of truth but ignores critical facts that would give a different impression. If there is something Mr. Shehady is good at, it is making this type of statement. In particular, after stating that the incumbent Republicans up for re-election (does anyone see a campaign plug here?) did a wonderful job in maintaining fiscal …

Former Mayor Fraenkel Running for Committee As Independent Democrat

Fraenkel looks to secure nomination tomorrow.

With the primary election on Tuesday, June 5, Springfield Democrats will have to choose between three candidates for Township Committee: the two party-backed candidates; Margaret Bandrowski and David Barnett and former Mayor Bart Fraenkel. The race marks something of a return to the fold for Fraenkel. Elected as a Democrat, Fraenkel grew estranged from the township’s party over appointments to the Springfield boards. In his last political race, he ran as an independent in a race with two Democrats.  “It’s very clear that in Springfield, an independent candidate can only be a spoiler,” Fraenkel said. “Too many people vote straight down the party line.” With the election coinciding with the presidential election, Democrats are likely to be …

Five Candidates Running for Township Committee

A mix of familiar and new faces enter the race.

Five candidates have filed with Springfield's Clerk's office to run for the two contested seats on the Township Committee. All but one of the candidates vying for a three year term on the five-member board are current or former members of the Committee. Republicans Jerry Fernandez and Marc Krauss, incumbents both, are running as part of the Regular Organization Republican of Union County. David Barnett and Margaret Bandrowski are running as part of the Regular Democratic Organization of Union County. Bart Fraenkel is running as a Democratic Choice ticket. Barnett is a former member of the Township Committee as well as the Zoning Board. Appointed to the Committee in 2009 following the death of two-term committee member Kenneth Faigenbaum, …

Fraenkel's Presence at Meeting Sparks Legal Debate

Shehady, others, worry about questions regarding the Open Public Meeting Act.

Woody Allen famously said that 80 percent of success is just showing up. That maxim wasn't borne out when Springfield Deputy Mayor Bart Fraenkel showed up at a recent government event. Fraenkel attended a session of last week's public forums on changes to RVSA billing. His presence has caused some consternation among township officials and legal experts. By taking part in the meeting, some say he skirted the rules governing public meetings. The town hall style forums were conducted by Mayor Ziad Shehady and finance chair Jerry Fernandez. With only two members of the five-person Township Committee present, they didn't have a majority of the committee and could not take government action. Therefore, they were not required to officially …

Mr. Fraenkel should know very well this is not a matter that is qualified to be discussed in Executive session accordingly to the law. As for the political motivation, Mr. Fraenkel contacted the Township Attorney first for an opinion and made this an issue that had to be addressed.   more ›

Letter to the Editor: Township Committee Meeting Wrong Forum for Politics

Deputy Mayor Fraenkel accuses Democrats of spreading half truths and Republican Mayor Ziad Shehady of rebutting them at the wrong time.

As we draw closer to Nov. 2 and the general elections, the methods and tactics used by both political parties reinforces the underlying problem with these groups. All they care about is placing their own people in positions of power without being guided by the integrity that is expected by the public. The local Democratic Party has issued campaign rhetoric lambasting the Township Committee and the policies of the Republican incumbent candidate for numerous things in an effort to criticize him and regain their control over the TC. Their statements are full of half-truths which they apparently feel comfortable stating. On the other hand, the Republican incumbent, the current mayor, has shown the ability to use political spin in responding to…

Fraenkel Mounts Independent Campaign

The former Mayor is taking on Democratic and Republican challengers in his bid for reelection to the Township Committee.

November's election is months away, but the ballot is already crowded and out of the ordinary. Five candidates are vying for two seats on the Township Committee. One is a familiar name running on a new ticket. Former Springfield Mayor Bart Fraenkel is running as an independent, mounting a campaign on his newly formed Springfield Party. Running as an unaffiliated candiated is a bold move, but it's in character for a politician who's made a habit of crossing party lines. Elected as a Democrat in 2006 to replace outgoing Committee member Mark Hurwitz, Fraenkel broke from Springfield's party over appointments to Township boards. In the most recent election, Fraenkel distanced himself further from the Democrats when he endorsed the two …

Night of Transitions for Township Committee

The last meeting of 2009 was overstocked with farewells.

The Springfield Township Committee meeting of Tuesday, Dec. 22 was packed with goodbyes, congratulations and messages of thanks. It was the last Township Committee meeting for two committee members, Beth Manes and David Barnett—Barnett was absent from the meeting—and Township Attorney Bruce Bergen. In addition, during the meeting, the committee accepted the retirement letter of Township Administrator Ed Fanning. In addition to working as the Township Administrator for the last five years, Fanning has served Springfield as a Township Committee member, Mayor and Township Attorney. In his retirement letter, which he read during the meeting, Fanning said he felt that it was time to exit public life and devote more time to his family. His last …

Clash at Committee Meeting

Fraenkel and resident share heated words; police called into Chambers.

The Nov. 10 Township Committee meeting lasted less than an hour and was sparsely attended, but was punctuated by a pointed exchange between Springfield Mayor Bart Fraenkel and Springfield resident Sandy Weinger. Fraenkel accused Weinger, a regular at government meetings, of irresponsibly spreading misinformation regarding the public pool. Weinger responded by accusing Fraenkel of bullying tactics. The exchange occurred during the time allotted for comments from the Committee and Fraenkel said Weinger had to wait until the time allotted for public comments before he could respond. Weinger said that being singled out in the Mayor’s comments gave him the right to respond and refused to concede. Some minutes into the argument, Fraenkel called …
