Dayton Boys Basketball Falls to New Providence

Bulldogs lose close game.

After a low-scoring first half, both New Providence and Jonathan Dayton boys’ varsity basketball teams broke out offensively in the second. But the Pioneers’ balanced attack allowed them to stay a step ahead of the Bulldogs and ultimately squeak ahead 49-47 despite a late Bulldog volley of three-point shots. New Providence (6-0) led 15-13 at the half, and then used a 13-4 third-quarter run and a 9-3 fourth-quarter run to withstand the Bulldogs’ outburst and remain undefeated. New Providence Coach Art Cattano attributed the first-half offensive struggles to his team being a little forceful. "[At halftime], I told them we need to relax a little bit more offensively," Cattano said. "Defensively, we want the intensity all the time but …

Dayton Boys Basketball: A Look Back and Ahead

The future looks bright for the Dayton squad after a historic postseason.

Now that the Dayton Bulldogs boy's basketball season has concluded, it's time to look back at what some cherished most about their respective seasons—and to also take a look into what they think the future holds for them. The fourth-seeded Bulldogs [18-7] won two playoff games for the first time under this senior class's regime and ended its season with a bitter 64-36 loss to top-seeded University. But the loss certainly did not epitomize the season. If anything, it made the young men on this team appreciate what they truly had. Star point guard Justin Grant will soon be named to the All-County team after posting stellar numbers for the Bulldogs [18-7]. The junior guard averaged team-highs in assists [3.5] and steals [2.6] and was a scant …

Dayton Basketball Call Season Success

Despite playoff loss, the Bulldog boy's hoops team has much to be proud

Despite Dayton's season ending prematurely, they had many things to be thankful of and much achievement to revel in. The 64-36 loss to top-seeded University in the semifinal round of the North Jersey Section 2, Group 1 state tournament, was crushing but, to a man, the season was still a success. "It was a great season. I'm proud of the kids and proud of the season we had. And not necessarily of the wins but the way they got there," said head coach Bob Martin afterwards. "They worked without any guarantees. And I'm certainly proud of our four seniors." Those seniors included co-captains Elliot Karp and Alex Popolani, Jonathan Wortman, and Sammy Dushkin. None had a particularly strong performance but when asked afterwards what they'll …

Dayton Boys Basketball Shuts Down New Providence

Boys are victorious in a toughly contested playoff game.

The Dayton boy's basketball team capped off a special night on their home floor with a theatrical 46-36 win over rival New Providence, in the opening round of the North 2, Group 1 state tournament. Perhaps feeling the pressure of a packed gymnasium—and also the fact that their female counterparts made it look easy in the earlier game—the boy's squad came out flat and were on the wrong end of a 12-4 opening quarter. The fourth-seeded Bulldogs opened the first quarter shooting two-of-16 and didn't look like the team with the higher seeding. Perhaps it was the claustrophobic feeling of a rare full house, or first-game jitters for this current squad that had yet to make it to the second round. Or maybe it was some form of both. "It's just …

Dayton Defeats South Amboy

The Bulldogs nearly blew their lead late in the game, but rallied to victory.

The Dayton boy's basketball had a rare Jekyll and Hyde performance in a 60-35 win over South Amboy. Led by Justin Grant's game-high 26 points, the Bulldogs [16-6] ended up cruising to victory but not without some mid-game drama. What figured to be a runaway by the end of the first half, a 29-13 Dayton lead, suddenly turned into a dicey nine-point lead early in the fourth quarter. The Governors [11-14] used a 13-2 run to bridge the third and fourth quarters, scoring more points in the third [14] than the entire first half. It took a Kareem Jackson three-point play in the beginning of the fourth quarter to finally get the Bulldogs back on track. Dayton came out strong behind Grant's aggressive play, and made it seem as if they'd cruise to …

Dayton Falls to Westfield in Second Round of Tournament

Final score of hotly contested game was 54-46.

The Dayton boy's basketball team saw its run in the Union County Interscholastic Athletic Conference end prematurely in a tough 54-46 loss to fifth-seeded Westfield. Led by point guard Hugo Nolasco's game-high 21 points, the Blue Devils [9-10] held off a late surge by the 12th-seeded Bulldogs. Dayton, which earned the right to play Westfield after easily disposing of Oratory Prep in the preliminary round, couldn't capitalize on a torrid start when they raced out to a 7-2 lead. Aaron Williams got the scoring started with a three pointer, a breakaway layup, and a tough putback off the offensive glass to give the Bulldogs [14-6] an opening surge. But that was about the only opening-quarter highlights for Dayton, as Westfield used an 11-2 run …

Boys Basketball Trounces Roselle Park

Final score of the away game was 70-41.

The Dayton Bulldogs earned a huge bounce-back win over a struggling Roselle Park team, 70-41, in a game that wasn't even that close. Led by junior guard Justin Grant's game-high 23 points, the Bulldogs [12-4] stole a road win – with the main culprit being Grant himself, as he also had a game-high eight steals. The fate of the Panthers [6-11] could've been worse, however, had Dayton head coach Bob Martin not emptied the bench to start the fourth quarter. Dayton led from opening tip to the final buzzer and was only challenged once, early in a sloppy opening quarter. But once things settled down, the Bulldogs really put it on an overmatched Roselle Park, outscoring them 16-5 in the second quarter, including a 9-0 run. Martin was happy to see …

Dayton Basketball Falls to Roselle Catholic

Final score was 35-20, Roselle Park.

The Dayton boy's basketball team fell victim to themselves Tuesday night in a sketchy 35-20 loss to Roselle Catholic. Beset by dreadful shooting, second chance point giveaways and a big man who made all small in comparison, Dayton [11-4] dropped its first game in over a week. As much of an obstacle Lions center Jameel Warney was to Dayton's gameplan, it was missed wide open shots that really doomed the Bulldogs. "That was the whole game," said Dayton head coach Bob Martin of his team's wayward shooting. "I wish I could say there were multiple things but we just really struggled offensively." Dayton got off to a slow start, getting  on the wrong end of a 7-0 run to open the game, and never seemed to get into its usual rhythm. And although …

Dayton Boys Basketball Beats New Providence

The team scores a victory over their rival school.

The Dayton Bulldogs continued their winning ways on Saturday, Jan. 30, with a 50-33 thumping of rival New Providence. Led by do-everything wingman Aaron Williams, who had a game-high 17 points, the Bulldogs [11-3] turned what was a defensive-oriented first half into a runaway second half, as the Bulldogs had more fourth quarter points [23] than in the entire opening half [18]. With the efforts of their junior front line of Williams and Kareem Jackson, Dayton avenged an earlier loss to New Providence with stellar defense, tenacious rebounding, and even a little flexing of muscles. When times got tenuous for the Pioneers, they reverted to extra physical play, pushing and shoving, and some mild chirping. But not even the extra-curricular …
