Springfield BID Releases Assessment of Retail Establishments and Market Analysis

The Business Improvement District of Springfield has released a report of the township that includes assessments of commercial properties and businesses and more.

The following information was provided by the Township of Springfield. The Springfield Business Improvement District has released a market study and retail assessment of Springfield Township. The study includes visual assessments of commercial properties and businesses within the  Business district, meetings with local stakeholders and merchants, and a consumer survey of  residents and visitors via paper mailers and online. Over 900 completed the survey  responses—well beyond our goal of 400. Analysis of that data revealed current supply and demand for more than 140  categories of retail. This report provides an in-depth evaluation of those  economic factors, as well as recommended strategies for revitalization of local commerce.  To …

BRAVO, Chrys !!! Many years back, the township comm. would not allow new buildings to be designed/built WITHOUT colonial architecture. In addition, this same township comm. did NOT allow neon signs!!!! Our town is now a mish mash with no theme or direction. If our leaders could not lead or continue to enforce ordinances designed to continue a 'colonial' look, how can we change it now without …   more ›

Research Firm Presents Results of BID Survey

Firm highlights challenges and opportunities for businesses in Springfield.

What will the future of Springfield business look like? On Monday, Jan. 14, Springfield business owners and residents packed the Joe Pepe Training room at the Fire Department Headquarters in hopes of getting an answer to that question. Mark Lohbauer from the JGSC Group research firm presented the results of the extensive marketing survey undertaken by the firm at the direction of Springfield's Business Improvement District last year. The survey and other studies undertaken by JGSC created a snapshot of Springfield’s shopping districts, the spending characteristics of people in and around the Township and how township businesses related to shopping in other towns. With that data, the group drew conclusions and made recommendations about the…

Why not move Municipal operations to Chisholm Community Center as a start to opening up the real estate. I think incentives to the local business owners partnered with briging in even one national chain (maybe starbucks or similar) to get people's attention would be a a way to start. This town NEEDS the BID effort, and it has to start somewhere.   more ›

Monday Night BID Presentation Delayed Due to Weather

Meeting scheduled for Monday, Oct. 29 pushed back because of weather concerns.

Springfield residents are going to have to wait to get the results of the Business Improvement District's survey a little longer. Members of the Business Improvement District today announced they are postponing the meeting, originally scheduled for Oct. 29,  due to the storm that is predicted for Monday and Tuesday.  Earlier this year, the BID commissioned the marketing group JGSC Group to survey Springfield residents about their shopping habits and their desires for the future of township business. The meeting was to have included a presentation on the over-900 respondents to the survey.  A new date has not yet been set.

Ambitious Plans for Downtown Unveiled

Early ideas for downtown redevelopment show a transformed town center.

The images of downtown Springfield in the plans presented to the Township Committee earlier this month looked markedly different from the downtown that exists today. The architects, designers and attorneys who made the presentation emphasized that the plan was still in its early stages and was an ongoing process. But even a diluted version of what was presented would be a dramatic shift from the Morris Ave. business district as it stands. Bob Blakeman, an architect from the firm PS&S, presented images of a bright and modern urban shopping area teeming with pedestrians and lit by sunlight. Blakeman said that the plan was an example of “new urbanism” and that pains were taken to include mixed use of housing and businesses in the space. The …

Its obvious why Mr. Krauss has not allowed comments on his recent Board of Health article. The Local Source has done a nice job of covering this issue. From what I can gather, this was a desperate attempt to clean up the big mess that Mr. Shehady created. The Board of Health controversy turned out to be an enormous PR nightmare for the Republicans and rightly so. This was simply another of …   more ›

Baltusrol to Join Business Improvement District

Famed golf club to be part of self-financed business improvement effort.

A year after the formation of the Springfield Business Improvement District, one of Springfield’s most prominent businesses is set to join it. Earlier this month, representatives of the Business Improvement district told the Springfield Township Committee that the Baltusrol Golf Club would soon be a BID member. The famed golf club was left out of the BID’s list of participating businesses after debate among officials and business owners. The business improvement district was established in August of 2010, and is headed by Beth Lippman, who has run similar efforts in Livingston and Pompton Lakes. Under the terms of the BID, businesses in the district collectively pay for improvements, promotions and maintenance for all three of Springfield’…

Shane, you're smart enough to know that when the property owners incur additional costs they will simply pass it along to their tenants, and the public ultimately gets to foot the bill on one level or another. As you said, simple economics dictates things, so if the property owners are going to have to pay more then in order to maintain the same level of income they will have to charge more just …   more ›
