This holiday season, local charity asks for your help.
To the parents of the Springfield Schools, We hope this letter finds you and your family well during this joyous holiday season. The events of this year reinforce the need to think of others who are less fortunate than ourselves. For the past four years, Springfield H.O.P.E, in conjunction with the Springfield Public Schools, Fire Department, Township, local businesses and many religious institutions have been running it’s annual Toys for Springfield Kids Program. From very humble beginnings, it has grown to a substantial collection. We would like this year to be as successful as years past, and then some…If you and your family wish to help our cause, please send your child to school with a New, Unwrapped toy to be deposited in one of …

Local cold treat favorite takes part in national fundraising drive.
Join the battle against childhood cancer by eating something cold and delicious. On June 10, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., the Ice Hut is offering ices to the public and donating money to the Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation. Members of the community were inspired to get involved with Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation after reading a story on Alexandra “Alex” Scott. After finding out how easy it was to get involved, they decided to hold a "lemonade stand" of their own. Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF) emerged from the front yard lemonade stand of cancer patient Alexandra “Alex” Scott (1996-2004). In 2000, 4-year-old Alex announced that she wanted to hold a lemonade stand to raise money to help find a cure for all children with cancer. …

A search for Gary Hecht’s name on Springfield Patch tells a story of service to the Springfield community. So it came as no surprise to learn that the Springfield Patriot Chamber of Commerce had named Hecht volunteer of the year. Hecht has long been a prominent member of Springfield’s volunteer and philanthropic community. In all of his efforts, he has been quick to credit the Springfield community for their support, as his comment on a Patch article after a toy collection illustrates. Thank you to the generous people of Springfield. We collected countless toys and helped more than 70 families and over 200 of Springfield's children received multiple new toys and games. There were hugs and tears and many stories of hardship shared. …

Coats are being collected for at-risk men, women and children throughout Union County as part of the 16th annual Jersey Cares Coat Drive. The non-profit organization's goal is to collect and distribute 50,000 "gently used" winter coats this fall. The drive runs until Dec. 15. During the past 15 years, Jersey Cares has collected, sorted and distributed hundreds of thousands of winter coats to New Jersey residents in need. Donated coats are collected and bagged for pick-up by companies, churches, police stations, schools and other organizations and individuals leading collection drives. The coats are then dropped off at a Jersey Cares Container Site, located throughout the state. Finally, social service agencies schedule times to pick-…

A new volunteer effort by local do-gooders takes books and media items from those who are done with them and delivers them to those who need them.
I'm writing to tell you about bookBgone, a venture that we (Andrea Hirschfeld and Lois Cantwell) recently launched. bookBgone is a free-of-charge, media-removal service that is dedicated to recycling, reusing and donating unwanted books. We pick up books, CDs, and DVDS in any condition curbside from your home. All too often, we have heard no one ‘takes’ unwanted books, and have often seen them in the trash. It occurred to us that there are plenty of people who want and can use these books. So we decided to become a kind of book/media clearinghouse. Since early June we have been picking up unwanted books, CDs and DVDs. We then work to put them in the hands of people who want and need books/media, or we reuse or recycle them. In this …

With the winter chill creeping in, the Community Conference of Springfield Schools' Parent Groups ("CCSSPG") is collecting coats for men, women, children and infants in New Jersey who might otherwise go cold. For 15 years, the Jersey Cares Coat Drive has collected and distributed "gently used" coats for people in the state considered "at risk." Organizations from throughout the state, ranging from churches to schools to police departments, collect coats which are delivered by a collection site representative to a central location where volunteers sort the donated coats for pick-up. This year, the charitable organization Jersey Cares, which runs the annual campaign, hopes to collect and distribute 40,000 winter coats. In the 2009 coat drive…
