AAA: Gas to be Cheaper in 2013

National Average Expected to Peak at $3.60-$3.80 Per Gallon This Year

The following is a release from AAA New Jersey --------------- Gasoline prices this year will be less expensive than in 2012 as a result of increased domestic oil production and lower demand, according to AAA. The national average price of gasoline should peak at $3.60-$3.80 per gallon barring any significant unanticipated events, which compares to a peak of $3.94 a gallon in 2012. “Cheaper gas prices are good news for the millions of Americans that depend on their car to travel where they need to go,” said Cathleen Lewis, director of Public Affairs for AAA New Jersey. “Lower gasoline prices should translate into billions of dollars in tangible household savings given that the vast majority of Americans rely on automobiles to live their …

Letter to the Editor: More Sanity Needed From Drivers

Patch reader noticed safer driving in hurricane but worries drivers have returned to bad habits.

During and immediately following Superstorm Sandy drivers in New Jersey (at least in Union County) seemed to driving with a little more sanity and courtesy than they normally do.  Now that Sandy has gone away they have returned to their old habits. During recent rainstorms and our snow this month I saw many driving without their headlights on. Also, while driving from Springfield through Summit to my job in New Providence, recently, I was cut off by two drivers exiting driveways and stop streets on Mountain Avenue, Springfield, and by two drivers in Summit who completely disregarded stop signs. I also have been tailgated several times. It is time for NJ drivers to abandon their maniacal and reckless habits. If they don't, law enforcement …

Letter to the Editor: Slow Down on Rose Ave.

Resident expresses problems with traffic and discourteous drivers.

I have been a resident of Rose Avenue, Springfield, for 12 years and the residents of my street have constantly been subjected to reckless drivers and no-residents who park anywhere on the street. Often the curb across from my driveway is so packed with non-resident cars that I cannot exit my own driveway. However, the more serious problem occurs when you are attempting to drive down the street and drivers coming in the other direction keep coming at you and refuse to yield. On Saturday morning, October 20, I was coming down Rose Avenue from Caldwell Place. There were cars—probably belonging to those attending the soccer matches at Ruby Field—taking up practically every space on both sides of the street. I turned onto Rose from Caldwell …

I commend you writing this letter. We used to live on Linden Ave. that is a cut through from Meisel Ave to Wabeno to Mountain Ave. Or reverse. My mother who worked for the town had to fight to get a "Children At Play" sign erected. Linden Ave. is 25 mph. & has no sidewalks. At any given time children are playing, people are walking, walking their dogs, jogging, etc. There are even stop signs @ …   more ›

OP-ED: AAA President on Kyleigh’s Law Ruling

AAA New Jersey Automobile Club President & CEO Frederick L. Gruel urges action on pending legislation covering teen driver safety.

The following opinion piece was submitted by AAA New Jersey Automobile Club President & CEO Frederick L. Gruel. The AAA's Car Care Center is on rte. 22 in Springfield.  The court has ruled that Kyleigh’s law is constitutional. The law was part of a package of teen driver bills that were designed to strengthen the Graduated Driver License (GDL) program. Since the implementation of the “decal law,” the rest of the package has been on pause while the court decided, the court has now decided and it’s time for the Legislature to begin work on the two provisions left that have been proven to keep teens safe behind the wheel . A-1571/S-674 would require 50 supervised driving hours over the course of a one year permit phase. This equates to less …
