Local public safety agencies put on a night for families in the middle of Springfield.
On Tuesday, August 7, families flocked to Springfield's Meisel park to celebrate Union County's celebration of National Night Out. Local public safety organizations and Union County employees offered refreshments and activitities. Celebrities onhand included famed crime dog McGruff and reknowned Frank Sinatra impressionist Eric DeLauro. Attendees were able to get up close and personal with bomb disposal robots, S.W.A.T. equipment, emergency vehicles and other public safety tech.

Award recognizes April lifesaving CPR call.
Springfield Emergency responders were recognized this week for their work in saving a man’s life on April 2. The unidentified Springfield resident had been experiencing chest pains throughout the night and couldn't sleep, so he dialed 911 shortly after 5 a.m. The Springfield firefighters and a Springfield police officer found the patient unresponsive and without a pulse. Members of the Fire Department, Atlantic Medics and the Springfield First Aid Squad responded to the scene and placed A.E.D. Defibrillation pads on his chest to shock the man back to life. The First Aid Squad brought the man to Overlook Hospital in Summit. On the way to the hospital, the patient went into cardiac arrest and the first aid squad resumed C.P.R., including …

Springfield First Aid Squad president Liz Fritzen said that the volunteer EMS crew has had been busy but that the members are up to the challenge. In a time when first aid crews are struggling to maintain membership elsewhere, Fritzen said the Springfield squad is thriving. Its 50-plus members responded to over 1,800 calls in 2011 and they continue to constantly respond to area emergencies. In making the declaration, Springfield Mayor Ziad Shehady encouraged Springfield residents to visit SpringfieldFAS and make a donation.

What do we want? Pancakes! When do we want them? How about Sunday Morning? Strange way to start an article involving the Springfield Volunteer First Aid Squad, I know. But this morning, ancakes will be the emergency call for the day. From 8:30 until 1 p.m., pancakes with all the fixings will be offered to all who come to the First Aid Squad House located at 10 North Trivett Avenue, that’s in front of town hall. Donations will be accepted (suggested adults $5 children $3). Since you are reading the Springfield Patch, you must have some relationship with the town of Springfield. A pancake breakfast to recognize and honor the Volunteer First Aid Squad members and kick off National Emergency Medical Services Week, will be held in front of the Springfield First Aid Squad House, 10 North Trivett Avenue, off of Mountain Avenue, in front of the Springfield Town Hall, from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on May 20. “Everyone is welcome to attend the pancake breakfast,” said President Elizabeth J. Springfield's EMS organization is asking for your vote.
Springfield's Springfield First Aid Squad, the township's primary provider of emergency medical care, is taking to the Internet in an effort to win a grant from Chase. Chase Community Giving, the philanthropic arm of Chase, is allocating $5 million to give to 200 local charities. The contest is being conducted through Facebook, where each competing organization has a page to collect votes from the public. The organization that receives the most votes will win $250,000. The next four will be awarded $100,000 and the remaining top 195 charities will gain $20,000. You can vote for the Springfield First Aid Squad by clicking here.
