First Aid Squad Swears in New Crew Chiefs

Veteran volunteer public safety workers take on new leadership roles.

Springfield's First Aid Squad welcomed five new crew chiefs to its roster at the Township Committee meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 22.  The five new crew chiefs, Stu Maslow, Richard Raymond, Shira Raymond, Jeremey Salow and Shane Ronan, are all veteran members of the squad with years of experience responding to emergencies and saving lives.  Before they sworn in, First Aid Squad Captain Apu Mullick explained that crew chiefs are essentially shift supervisors and extolled the qualifications of each new chief. With them in place, the First Aid Squad has a total of 18 crew chiefs.  The crew chief candidates were required to pass oral and written exams testing their knowledge and proficiency.  “We went from thirteen to eighteen crew chiefs,” squad …

Fires and Medical Emergencies Keep First Aid Squad Busy

Holiday season afforded volunteer emergency responders little opportunity to rest.

The Springfield First Aid Squad has had an extremely busy year so far, having responded to almost 30 emergencies through the middle of the week, including two standbys at major structure fires in Union County. The squad was requested to provide medical stand-bys at major structure fires in Elizabeth on Sunday night and in Linden early Tuesday morning. The squad was also requested at another fire in Hillside on Sunday morning, but was unable to respond due to multiple calls in Springfield. The Springfield First Aid Squad is frequently asked to respond to fires across Union County, and its first-aiders are trained and experienced at providing standbys and assessments for firefighters. In addition to the many hours its crews have spent at …

Car Crashes into Morris Ave. Home

Two members of family sent to hospital following accident.

A car crashed into a Morris Avenue home, sending two people to the hospital, including a small child. Emergency responders said that some time around 4 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 1, an elderly driver of a town car lost control of his vehicle. Reportedly swaying the vehicle as he drove the one-way street, the driver—described by neighbors and emergency responders as in his 70s or older—lost control of his vehicle and spun into a single family home set set back from the road.  His car was lodged into the home up to the windshield and required firefighters and emergency responders from Springfield and neighboring towns to perform emergency carpentry to extract the vehicle. Neighbors said the man was not injured in the accident.  The car slammed …

Springfield First Aid Squad Pancake Breakfast is Today

A note from FAS member Fred Ostry urging the community to enjoy some delicious pancakes and help out a community institution.

What do we want?  Pancakes! When do we want them? How about Sunday Morning? Strange way to start an article involving the Springfield Volunteer First Aid Squad, I know.  But this morning, ancakes will be the emergency call for the day. From 8:30 until 1 p.m., pancakes with all the fixings will be offered to all who come to the First Aid Squad House located at 10 North Trivett Avenue, that’s in front of town hall. Donations will be accepted (suggested adults $5 children $3).     Since you are reading the Springfield Patch, you must have some relationship with the town of Springfield.  If you do, the Springfield Volunteer First Aid Squad has helped you or someone you know, in a time of need. So here we are, why are we holding a “Pancake …
