On TV: Clark Filmmaker's Documentary on Her Father's Experience as a POW

Theresa Loong's film tells the story of her father's life from a teenager and POW in a Japanese work camp during World War II to becoming a doctor and settling on Nassau Street in Clark.

While growing up in Clark, Chinese-American filmmaker Theresa Loong knew little about her father Paul's past. Then, one day she discovered his secret diary, written when he was a teenager and POW in a Japanese work camp during World War II. In it, he vowed to make “every day a holiday” if he ever survived. Told through Loong’s eyes, Every Day Is a Holiday tells the life-affirming story of her father’s unlikely journey, from Chinese Malay teenager and Japanese POW, to merchant seaman, American soldier, Veterans Affairs doctor, and proud citizen of the country that liberated him: the United States. Using intimate conversations, rare archival footage and his wartime diary, the film traces how, through sheer strength of will and a remarkably …

Goodwill Offers Professional Outfits for Vets

In Memorial Day event, Goodwill asks for public to donate work clothes for returning vets.

In honor of Memorial Day, Goodwill of New York and New Jersey is remembering members of the armed forces who have sacrificed so much for our country by helping veterans returning to the work force. This Memorial Day weekend, Goodwill locations will provide a professional outfit to all veterans, past or present, who go to any of Goodwill’s 38 stores, show their military ID, and mention "Goodwill Suits Vets."   Goodwill spokespeople said the offer was reflected the thousands of military men and women who return from abroad seek to re-join the workforce at home. Some lack clothes for work and interviews, or even a place to live.  “We are committed to being a hometown resource for veterans who have served our communities and preserved our …

Letter to Editor: Mirabella Stresses Support for Veterans

Union County Freeholder chair asks all residents to commemorate Memorial Day by connecting with U.S. Military veterans.

As Memorial Day approaches, our thoughts naturally turn to the sacrifices that have been made by Union County residents while serving in the U.S. military. Each year on this day, thousands of Union County residents from all walks of life, including my colleagues on the Freeholder Board and many County employees, join in commemorative ceremonies and activities to keep the memory of the deceased alive in our hearts. One of Union County’s long-running traditions is the distribution of tens of thousands of American flags to veterans’ groups and civic organizations like the Boy Scouts. Members of these groups fan out across the cemeteries of Union County each Memorial Day to ensure that every veteran’s grave is visited, recognized and honored. …

Mr. Mirabella, How come your brother was not prosecuted, and allowed to merely resign from the Garwood Police Department, while someone like Off. Brian Thomas and Lt. Richard Tierney are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law?   more ›

Memorial Day Special: A Conversation with Navy Ensign

Dayton grad and Navy Ensign Mauricio Blondet

Dayton grad and Navy Ensign Mauricio Blondet's ship the USS New York has been stationed in its namesake city for Fleet Week. He spoke with Patch via email shortly before his ship docked. In honor of Memorial Day, we present our conversation with Blondet below.  Could you tell me a little bit about yourself, like your reasons for joining the Navy and what you do in the service?  I enlisted in the Navy in 1999. My main reason was to earn money for college. I was accepted into a commissioning program called Seaman to Admiral 21 in which the Navy selects enlisted sailors to go to college for 3 years and then they earn a commission as officers in the Navy. I was accepted into that program in 2006. That goal (to get the Navy to pay for college) …

Editor's Notebook: Memorial Day Memorialized at Last... or Hey! I Didn't Know My Camera Did That

Technology nearly thwarts Patch editor.

You are probably wondering why am I putting up photos from Memorial Day when it's nearly Labor Day. Or perhaps you are not wondering that at all, and are instead just happy to see the nice pictures of children and noteworthy locals taking part in a patriotic ceremony. In either event, an explanation is coming your way. I attended the event at the request of Springfield Committee member Marc Krauss, a retired Army Officer who attended Sandmeier Elementary School's ceremony in his military formal wear.  The ceremony was great. Sandmeier students read poems dedicated to lost soldiers and placed paper roses near a Memorial Day sign. I got shots of Krauss and the kids, as well as outgoing Sandmeier principal Michael Antolino. And the kids were …
