Letter to the Editor: Millburn Residents Against Proposed Stop and Shop

Millburn-Short Hills organization, Residents for Traffic Safety, write a letter to the editor on their stance against a new supermarket in a recap of their latest forum.

To Millburn-Short Hills Patch: About 20-25 residents attended the Residents For Traffic Safety forum on Thursday, Nov. 29 to express their concerns, ask questions, and offer their ideas regarding the Stop & Shop development planned to be built on Millburn Avenue.  Generally, the comments centered around public safety and lowering of the quality of life in the area due to the greatly increased car and truck traffic that the supermarket will draw.  As resident Mary Fran Johnson stated, ”I can’t believe that an additional 6,000 cars a day would NOT have an impact on the quality of our neighborhood and town.” Attendees agreed that all trucks should not be required to enter and exit on Millburn Avenue and that there should be a traffic light at…

Not sure why Millburn is so bent out of shape with regards to the Stop & Shop which is located closer to Morris Ave and Millburn Ave when they allowed the building of 30 town homes at the corner of Millburn Ave and Short Hills Ave where congestion is already bad enough and closer to Downtown Millburn, Short Hills Train Station, and Parochial School on the corner. Watch what happens to congestion …   more ›

Will New Stop & Shop Add Traffic To Millburn Avenue?

Millburn residents and officials ask at Zoning Board Meeting if Springfield's proposed food store will cause traffic.

Residents and the township engineer raised concerns of traffic safety, after representatives from Springfield presented the proposed building and landscaping plans for the Stop & Shop on Millburn Avenue. The Stop & Shop is proposed for the old Saks Fifth Avenue location, 92 Millburn Ave., in Short Hills. Even though that property is located in Springfield, Millburn has jurisdiction on the 20-foot piece of land entering the property engineeer Thomas Watkinson said. "There will be some more talk because the there's an issue with the way it's set," said Watkinson at this week's Zoning Board meeting. "It's the driveways, that's what causes the problems." This week, the traffic engineer for ARC was scheduled to address the traffic plan, but the…

The courts have already ruled that Springfield can't delay Stop and Shop from building any longer, but Millburn has been in court trying to delay/stop them. Springfield has already lost untold amounts of taxable dollars from the space being unoccupied for so many years. What is it that Millburn wants from us to eleviate traffic? If they need something done to ease their traffic burden, will it …   more ›

St. Stephen's Still Recovering From Disaster

The Millburn-Short Hills Historical Society will join St. Stephen's Church in a Spring Tea and Tag Sale to raise money to support the church's repairs from Hurricane Irene flood.

When the Rahway River flooded much of Millburn during Tropical Storm Irene, Patch reported that St. Stephen’s Church “was one of the first hit as water rushed through, filling the pre-school with four to five feet of water...” The rector’s assistant, Betty Innemee, was the first to arrive and the first to see the condition of the Rectory. “I heard water rushing into the living room,” she said. “I went in there and part of the ceiling came down right in front of me. After that, I really had to sit on the front steps for bit and gather myself. We had just finished the restoration.” The Rev. Sheelagh Clarke would begin as rector of St. Stephen’s just two days after Irene. She had great difficulty getting to the church from her home because of…

A recent Army Corps of Engineers report shows that solutions upstream might help towns along the Union County portion of the Rahway River.

Preliminary findngs by the Army Corps of Engineers indicate that there are some solutions upstream from Union County that might help with flood mitigation in the towns along the Rahway River. "There were promising flood mitigation solutions contained in a preliminary U.S. Army Corps of Engineers report provided to the Mayors Council on Rahway River Flood Control at its April 3 meeting," former Cranford Mayor Daniel Aschenbach said. Aschenbach was involved with the creation of the Mayor's Council and continues to be involved in the organization. Watershed Conference Addresses Flood Control On A Regional Basis

Officials and residents from towns along the Rahway River met at Union County College recently to discuss flood remediation.

Officials from Cranford, Union, Springfield, Winfield and Millburn met late last week to discuss possible solutions to flooding issues along the Rahway River Watershed. Although a number of possible remedies were offered, one thing was unanimous: the situation must be addressed from a regional perspective. The Rahway River Watershed Conference on Flood Control was hosted by Cranford at Union County College on Springfield Avenue and began with an address by Mayor Dan Aschenbach, who showed an audience of more than 100 concerned residents pictured of flood damage that occurred in the wake of Hurricane Irene in late August. "It's a regional battle that we need to focus on," Aschenbach said. Leo Coakley, a civil engineer with the firm Hatch …

What about dredging; was that ever discussed? I believe this is the remaining phase of the Cranford plan, along with building up the banks, but has been delayed. Can our legislators put some pressure on the DEP to relax their stringent regulations on disposal of the dredged materials? This would be a significant improvement in the maximum flow capacity of the river if implemented, as per the 2001…   more ›
