Monday Springfield's Board of Education meets tonight at 7:30 p.m. at Jonathan Dayton High School's Indepedent Media Center. The Springfield Seniors hold a Bingo game at the Sarah Bailey Center at 1 p.m. The Charter Commission meets at 7:30 p.m., at the Museum in Springfield's Library. Tuesday Throughout the month, the Springfield Library's Donald Palmer Museum displays the painting series by Rosalind Dorlen titled “The Front Porch," alongside Mary Kooi's “The Art of Mary Kooi." While the Dayton Boys Basketball team plays an away game against Summit, the Girls' squad takes on New Providence at home. Springfield Man Convicted of Murdering Orange Teen An Essex County jury convicted Springfield resident Keevin David, 20, of murdering 18-year-old Tyrell Coleman of Orange in January, 2011. Assistant Prosecutor Portia Downing, who tried the case, said David shot Coleman while Coleman was walking home from high school. The motive for the shooting was not clear. David faces 30 years to life. Van Catches Fire on Route 22 A van burst into flames on route 22 in Union near the Springfield border shortly after 3 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 25. No one was hurt in the single car accident. An officer for the Union fire department said the driver reported that the late model white Nissan caught fire for no apparent reason. Monday Despite the Martin Luther King's Day holiday, Springfield schools are open today. Per an announcement at a December meeting of the Springfield Board of Education, classes are in session to make up for time missed earlier in the school year. The Inter-Faith Clergy Council will have an observance honoring Martin Luther King, Jr. at 11 a.m., in the Kenneth Faigenbaum Committee Chambers on the second floor of town hall. Tuesday The Springfield Township Committee holds its second meeting of January at 7:30 p.m. at the Springfield municipal building. Research Firm Presents Results of BID Survey On Monday, Jan. 14, Springfield business owners and residents packed the Fire Department Headquarters to hear the JGSC Group's Mark Lohbauer present the results of their marketing survey. JGSC created a snapshot of Springfield’s shopping districts and the spending characteristics. With that data, the group drew conclusions and made recommendations about the challenges and opportunities facing Springfield business. Bergen Sworn into Freeholder Board On Sunday, Jan. 6, Bruce Bergen was sworn into the Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders. Bergen, a Springfield resident and a partner in the Cranford law firm of Krevsky, Silber & Bergen, has practiced law in Union County for 32 years and has been active in leadership and elected positions with the Union County Democratic Committee since 1979. Bergen was Springfield's township attorney for 17 of the past 19 years. Reorganization Brings New Leadership for Springfield On Jan. 1, Union County Clerk Joanne Rajoppi swore in newly elected officials to Springfield's Township Committee. Democrats David Barnett and Margaret Bandrowski were sworn onto the Committee, joining veteran Democratic Committee members Dave Amlen and Rich Huber who became Springfield's new Mayor and Deputy Mayor, respectively. Springfield Posts New Recycling Collection Rules After voting for a new service provider and refuse collection schedule late last year, Springfield implemented a new recycling collection schedule at the beginning of 2013. Springfield Officials Decide on 2013 Garbage and Recycling Collection Schedule After debate from members of the public and officials, the Springfield township committee voted to have weekly garbage and recycling pickups. Residents were split on the proposal to reduce garbage pickup from a twice weekly to a weekly schedule. While some thought the change would be a painless way to encourage more recycling, others worried that less frequent garbage collection would cause smells and attract rodents, particularly in warmer months. Springfield Parents, School Officials and Police Debate Student Safety In response to last week’s school shooting in Newtown, CT, Springfield school and safety officials spoke with parents at length about safety procedures at Springfield Schools at the Springfield Schools Board of Education meeting. Chief of Police John Cook joined school officials in a presentation on safety precautions. During the presentation and the question and answer session that followed, parents questioned if the safety measures in place were enough. Springfield Republicans File for Recount Following a close election marked by unusual circumstances due to Tropical Storm Sandy, Springfield Republicans have asked the courts to once again go over the ballots. This week, Springfield Republicans filed paperwork with the Superior Court of New Jersey in Union County requesting a recount of the ballots cast for the four candidates for Township Committee. The Union County Board of Elections certified the results on November 26, 2012. David Barnett and Margaret Bandrowski were declared winners by a narrow margin, with Bandrowski has beating incumbent Jerry Fernandez by five votes.
