The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection today warned that ozone levels are forecast to reach unhealthy levels for sensitive groups category across New Jersey today and tomorrow. The NJ DEP attributed the spike in ozone levels to west/southwest winds, mostly sunny skies, and hot temperatures. They warned that sensitive individuals including the very young, the elderly, and persons with respiratory diseases such as asthma, should avoid strenuous outdoor activities during the afternoon and early evening hours. In addition, fine particles are forecast to reach the moderate category across the Garden State. Township Committee will absorb functions of formerly autonomous board.
Following a protracted and contentious discussion, the Township Committee passed the ordinance overhauling Springfield’s Board of Health on Tuesday, June 26. The vote was split across party lines, with the Committees three Republicans voting in favor and the two Democrats voting against. With the vote, the Board of Health will be composed of the Township Committee members and two residents with expertise in public health. It replaces the seven-member autonomous board composed of volunteers that the township previously had in place. Signs urging support for autonomous board are dotting homes throughout Springfield.
Supporters of the current Board of Health have put up lawn signs throughout Springfield calling for residents to help retain the autonomous board. The final vote on the proposed changes to the board is tomorrow, June 26.

If you 60 years of age or older and meet certain income requirements, you can get your fruit and veggies cheaper in Union County. The Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders has announced that the county is once again participating in the 2012 New Jersey Farmers Market Program, which provides eligible senior citizens with $20 in vouchers to purchase “Jersey Fresh” fruits, vegetables and herbs. Eligible Union County residents can use the vouchers at any "Jersey Fresh" farmers market in the county — or, indeed, in the state of New Jersey.
