Chief Cook Provides Public Safety Update

At workshop meeting, Cook touts success of efforts to curb car burglaries and traffic violations.

Springfield Chief of Police John Cook provided an update on public safety to the Township Committee this week. His statistics indicated success with fighting car burglaries and with issuing motor vehicle summons. The first notable success he touched on was the red light cameras installed on the intersection of Morris and Maple Aves. Cook said the cameras, set to detect and issue tickets for illegal turns and other motor vehicle violations, had been detecting 40-50 violations per day. Cook said that thefts from parked cars, an issue that has noted in Patch articles Patch articles, were drastically reduced in 2012. Cook said that reports were down 39 percent from the previous year and attributed the reduction to public outreach. He …

Red Light Cameras to be Reinstated

Cameras will issue summonses for offenses that occurred during the suspension period.

The days of blowing through red lights without consequence are soon coming to a close. The red light cameras suspended last month throughout New Jersey, including Springfield, have been re-authorized by the state.  After a directive from the New Jersey Department of Transportation, 21 municipalities have provided re-certifications for the cameras. The announcement confirms the red light cameras’ yellow light timing, the issue that caused the state to suspend them, is in accordance with the formula specified in the legislation. On Tuesday, June 19, the New Jersey Department of Transportation announced it was suspended ticketing from red-light cameras in 21 of 25 municipalities it approved to use the technology, including Springfield. The …

AAA Statement on Red Light Camera Suspension

Motorist Advocacy group applauds NJDOT action.

In a statement, AAA commended the New Jersey Department of Transportation decision to suspend the red light camera program pending an investigation in 21 municipalities where those cameras may have been operating in violation of New Jersey state law. Springfield was one of the of the 21 municipalities impacted.  According to NJDOT, state law requires duration of the amber light in a traffic signal that differs from the federal standard formula that NJDOT and New Jersey municipalities are required by law to use in operating traffic signals. AAA said the motorist advocacy organization is concerned that red light cameras at intersections with overly short amber lights may have been in operation for years and generating millions of dollars in …

DOT Suspends Red-Light Camera Tickets, Including Springfield's

The NJ Department of Transportation has suspended red-light camera programs in 21 of 25 municipalities.

Just two months after their installation, Springfield's red light cameras have lost their ability to enforce traffic violations. On Tuesday, June 19, the New Jersey Department of Transportation announced it was suspended ticketing from red-light cameras in 21 of 25 municipalities it approved to use the technology, including Springfield. DOT has ordered ticketing suspended at 63 of 85 camera-monitored intersections statewide after it learned the pilot program's legislation specifies a formula to determine the proper duration of the yellow light in a traffic signal that differs from the legally required, nationally accepted formula DOT and the state's municipalities use when installing traffic signals. Ticketing by red-light cameras has been…

Just curious. Did the camera also send a summons to cars that made the illegal left turn from Morris Avenue Easbound onto Maple Avenue, or were they just after those who went through red lights?   more ›
