Democrats Prevail in Springfield Recount Lawsuit The lawsuit over Springfield's 2012 election has ended with Democratic candidate Margaret Bandrowski for Township Committee holding her seat by a three-vote margin. Power Outages in Springfield Reported After Severe Weather On Thursday, Jan. 31, Jersey Central Power & Light reported that 892 Springfield customers lost power. In a message on their site, the power company attributes the loss of power "to severe weather that passed through our service territory." Springfield Man Convicted of Murdering Orange Teen An Essex County jury convicted Springfield resident Keevin David, 20, of murdering 18-year-old Tyrell Coleman of Orange in January, 2011. Assistant Prosecutor Portia Downing, who tried the case, said David shot Coleman while Coleman was walking home from high school. The motive for the shooting was not clear. David faces 30 years to life. Van Catches Fire on Route 22 A van burst into flames on route 22 in Union near the Springfield border shortly after 3 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 25. No one was hurt in the single car accident. An officer for the Union fire department said the driver reported that the late model white Nissan caught fire for no apparent reason. Research Firm Presents Results of BID Survey On Monday, Jan. 14, Springfield business owners and residents packed the Fire Department Headquarters to hear the JGSC Group's Mark Lohbauer present the results of their marketing survey. JGSC created a snapshot of Springfield’s shopping districts and the spending characteristics. With that data, the group drew conclusions and made recommendations about the challenges and opportunities facing Springfield business. Springfield Officials Decide on 2013 Garbage and Recycling Collection Schedule After debate from members of the public and officials, the Springfield township committee voted to have weekly garbage and recycling pickups. Residents were split on the proposal to reduce garbage pickup from a twice weekly to a weekly schedule. While some thought the change would be a painless way to encourage more recycling, others worried that less frequent garbage collection would cause smells and attract rodents, particularly in warmer months. Springfield Republicans File for Recount Following a close election marked by unusual circumstances due to Tropical Storm Sandy, Springfield Republicans have asked the courts to once again go over the ballots. This week, Springfield Republicans filed paperwork with the Superior Court of New Jersey in Union County requesting a recount of the ballots cast for the four candidates for Township Committee. The Union County Board of Elections certified the results on November 26, 2012. David Barnett and Margaret Bandrowski were declared winners by a narrow margin, with Bandrowski has beating incumbent Jerry Fernandez by five votes. Town Hall Menorah Poll Results While a majority of Springfield residents inSpringfield Patch's informal poll said they favored having a Menorah outside of the municipal building as part of the the township's holiday celebration, a significant minority oppose the idea. Of the 87 votes in the poll, 63 respondents favored having a Menorah dispay and 24 opposed. Springfield Holiday Tree Lighting 2012 This year's holiday celebration attracted record crowds. People flocked to the family friendly attractions, which included a petting zoo, a horse-drawn wagon and a visit from Santa himself. Ambitious Plans for Downtown Springfield Unveiled Architects, designers and attorneys presented Springfield officials with plans for Springfield's Morris Ave. business district that looked markedly different from the downtown that exists today. The presentation, which officials and developers stressed was an early draft, showed a bright and modern urban shopping area teeming with pedestrians and lit by sunlight. Fall for Springfield Festival Springfield once again celebrated its annual fall festival. Police: Two Men Arrested for Stealing Cooking Oil Springfield police reported that two Newark men were arrested after attempting to steal waste cooking oil from the West 22 Diner. On Oct. 1, Officer Michael Wlazlo arrested Daniel Avilez and Omar Juarez at the West 22 Diner on Route 22 after they were allegedy observed attempting to steal the contents of a waste cooking oil container. Police said the men used a van outfited with a tank and pump to siphon oil from tanks. Both were charged with theft and have a municipal court appearance date. Multiple Drivers Land in Hospital Following Route 78 Accident Emergency workers from Springfield, Summit and Berkeley Heights responded to a multi-auto accident on Interstate 78 on Oct. 8. Police accused an alleged career burglar with a string of area burglaries and burglary attempts, including the attempted burglary of an autobody shop this month and a 2009 burglary of a Springfield deli. The man reportedly stole a car from the Dobb's Autobody lot and used the car to crash through the lot's steel gates. He was also connected to robberies in Union and elsewhere. Two men charged with shoplifting from the CVS pharmacy on Morris Ave. in Springfield led police on a multi-town chase. On Tuesday, Aug. 14, CVS employees contacted police, reporting that shoplifters had just fled the store. Following a chase, police charged both men with Shoplifting and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and one of the men was also charged with …

Troy Village Apartment houses were without power and a car was crushed a domino-like series of events on Tuesday, August 7. A tree landed on a nearby power line, which subsequently pulled down a utility poll, which in turn crashed into a parked car. No one was hurt in the incident. Jersey Central Power & Light crews were called to the scene to repair the poll. Springfield Auxiliary police officers stationed at the accident site said the tree fell down on its own and ascribed the break to rot. Neighbors questioned the rot as a cause, noting that the full-grown tree had been uprooted and the recent stormy weather.
