Township Committee Rescinds Three Police Hires

Three uncertified candidates will not join the force.

In a split vote, the Springfield Township Committee rescinded the job offers extended last month to three prospective new police hires.  Their hiring was met with controversy. The three candidates scheduled to begin work on Jan. 11, William J. Carroll, John Laurencelle and James Aleszczyk, all had military backgrounds, but no civilian law-enforcement experience. They were slated to train at Union County's John H. Stamler Police Academy before joining the Springfield police force as patrolmen in May. Critics of the hiring plan, including the Union County Prosecutor's Office and the Township's PBA chapter, said that Springfield should have hired experienced officers who had lost their jobs in other New Jersey police departments suffering …

Township Holds Emergency Drills at Schools Today

Exercises focus on preparation for active shooters

Schools are closed today, with teachers and staff attending the NJEA convention. But the school buildings won't be empty. Today and tomorrow, Springfield emergency services are holding emergency drills at the schools to train for scenarios involving active shooters. Members of the public are advised that Springfield police officers are training in the buildings, and that residents should not be alarmed by the presence of emergency personnel. "Public safety and the security of our children are of the utmost importance," Springfield Mayor Ziad Shehady said in a statement.  "It is vital that we are prepared in the event of any unfortunate circumstances and that we have a chance to critique and evaluate the working relationships of multiple …

Rosell Hits the Ground Running

Springfield's first Public Safety Director has been making moves.

In his first months on the job as Springfield's first director of the Public Safety Division, Richard Rosell has been very busy. Charged with overseeing Springfield's  police and fire divisions and the office of emergency management, Rosell has to lead the departments and while figuring out his own job. "The instructions were very broad," Rosell said. "Not unclear, just broad. I was given a lot of latitude." He was given responsibility of two relatively troubled institutions. The Fire Department, still suffering the effects of a highly publicized nepotism scandal from the mid '00s, is operating without a working volunteer division and, according to observers and people in the department, understaffed. The police department, led for years …

School Board Hears Plans for School Resources Officer

Police officer will be dedicated to school system, not looking to arrest kids, Rosell said.

At their September 20 meeting, Springfield's Board of Education heard from the Township's Public Safety director Richard Rosell about plans to institute a schools resource officer. The schools resource officer would be a member of the Springfield Police Department permanently assigned to safety through the entire school district. Don't expect to see Springfield police patrolling the halls of Dayton, though. Rosell said the resource officer position is not meant to create increased police presence, but to instead "provide a resource between school and officers" and a "friendly and familiar face for the school." "It isn't a cop there waiting to put handcuffs on kids," Rosell told the Board. Rosell said the new position was part of his …
