Firefighters made quick work of fire in a house's garage.
Shortly after 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 27, Springfield firefighters responded to a fire on Garden Oval that started with a parked car and spread to a garage. Springfield Fire Chief James Sanford said at approximately 8:20 p.m., the residents of 59 Garden Oval smelled smoke, checked the house finding a vehicle fire inside their attached garage. An off-duty Fire Captain drove by while the resident tried to get the car out of the garage. The Fire Captain notified the dispatcher and another off-duty Fire Captain living across the street assisted with ensuring that the residents exited the home. Resident and pet lover helped raise money for new oxygen masks.
Until recently, Springfield Firefighters were only equipped to help members of a single species: human. Thanks to an initiative undertaken by a pet-loving Springfield resident, they are able to save lives of pets as well. This month, all Springfield fire department vehicles were equipped with breathing masks designed to work with dogs and cats. The masks work are compatible with preexisting firefighting equipment and are compact, able fit into small bags and stowed into emergency vehicles without displacing any other gear. Each bag includes CPR instructions for animals. Standard issue masks are too large for animals and are unable to completely cover a face not shaped like a human’s, such as a dog’s snout. Veteran firefighter rises to command position.
At the Sept. 11 Springfield Township Committee meeting, Marc Corea became the newest member of the Fire Department's command staff. Corea, a longtime member of the department who has taken an active role in community engagement, was promoted to Captain. In addition to his experiences ensuring public safety as a firefighter, Corea has been active with past Toys for Tots drives with the department.

Combination of fire department efforts, rain combats fire at home.
A fire at a home on New Brook Lane in Springfield was placed under control within minutes of the fire department arriving thanks to help from the heavy rain in the area, fire officials said. The fire department responded to a call around 3:50 p.m. today that led them to the fire outside a house at 31 New Brook Ln. The fire began to spread into the attic of the house but before any structural damage could be done, firefighters, with aid from the rain, were able to put the blaze under control. There were no injuries reported and no damage to the home. The cause of the fire is under investigation. Check back to Patch.com as more details become available.

David Maas and Michael Mastroeni move up in rank.
In a formal ceremony, Springfield firefighters David Maas and Michael Mastroeni were sworn in as Captains at the Township Committee meeting on Tuesday, June 26 Township Committee meeting. Both veteran firefighters were joined by their families in the ceremony. Officially, they had been promoted earlier in the month. Their appointment follows the recent promotion of Carlo Palumbo to Deputy Chief. Shortly before being officially sworn in, a beaming Maas told Patch he was grateful to the department and to Springfield for the opportunity to serve.
