SWAT Team Called After Men Fired Guns Off Deck of Springfield Home

Two men firing guns off a Springfield deck after a few beers led to an hours long standoff with police and the work of the Union County SWAT team Tuesday night. According to Springfield Police Detective Judd Levenson, residents began calling police headquarters around 11:30 p.m to report hearing a series of gun shots or fireworks. Police headed to the area of Tooker Place and began to narrow the possible location.  "There are only five homes on Tooker Place and so an officer began checking the area on foot," Levenson told Patch. "He saw a male subject on the back deck of one home and asked if he had heard anything. When that individual said he had not heard anything, the officer grew suspicious. Springfield Man Tried to Elude Police, Arrested for DUI After Foot Pursuit

The following release was provided by the Springfield Police Department. On Monday morning 03/18/2013 at 12:41 am, Officer Keith Christopher was in a marked patrol vehicle on Center Street traveling towards the Morris Avenue intersection. A motor vehicle, a green Volvo sedan, turned onto Center Street from Morris Avenue almost striking the officer's police vehicle head on. As the vehicle sped past, Officer Christopher turned around and went after the Volvo through the Hannah Street intersection where it then pulled into a driveway as the driver ducked down in the car. As the officer stopped and turned on his emergency lights he observed the driver running off into the rear yard of a house on Center Street with the officer in foot pursuit. …

As written, officer Christopher observed the suspect and another officer running. Where did this other officer come from? He's nowhere in this story. DATE: 03/07/2013     TIME: 9:13 pm      LOCATION: Route 22 East Officer ERCAN SIDAR stopped a motor vehicle for having a broken tail light. The driver, Shane EDWARDS age 22 of Westfield, was subsequently arrested for an outstanding bench warrant issued by the Rahway Municipal Court for failure to appear in court on a motor vehicle offense. He was later released from custody after posting bail. Man Arrested for Pot After Driving Wrong Way Down One-Way Street, Say Police

DATE: 03/04/2013     TIME: 10:58 pm     LOCATION: Springfield Avenue Officer Daniel Zieser stopped a motor vehicle when he observed it approaching his location traveling the wrong way on a one-way street. The driver, Christopher Gioello, age 25 of Staten Island NY, had become lost when trying to locate an on ramp for Route 78. When the officer had the driver open his window it was found that the car was filled with the odor and smoke of burnt marijuana and a half-smoked cigar containing marijuana instead of tobacco was in the ashtray. Gioello was also found to have a small bag of raw marijuana inside of his vehicle. He was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana (under 50 grams) and later released with initial court appearance …

Bloomfield Man Arrested for DUI After Police Catch Him Hit a Curb

DATE: 03/03/2013     TIME: 1:40 am     LOCATION: Morris Avenue Officer Brian Trotman stopped a motor vehicle on Morris Avenue after he observed it weaving in and out of a traffic lane and striking a curb. An investigation by the officer resulted in the arrest of Christopher Cocca, 40, of Bloomfield, for driving under the influence of alcoholic beverages.  Cocca was later released with an initial court date set in the Springfield Municipal Court.

Springfield Police Arrest Union Woman For Marijuana Possession

DATE: 03/01/2013     TIME: 10:39 p.m.     LOCATION: Mountain Avenue Officer Melissa Esteves stopped a motor vehicle for having a headlight out and while speaking with the driver she observed a passenger had her pants covered with green leafy matter that appeared to be marijuana. This person, Melissa Simoes, age 20 of Union, was further observed to be attempting to conceal a grinder between her legs as she was seated in the vehicle and she had a very strong odor of raw marijuana emanating from her person. As the grinder is utilized in conjunction with the preparation of marijuana when it is to be inhaled, Simoes was arrested by Officer Esteves. She was also found to possess …

Springfield Cop Smells Pot, Arrests Kenilworth Woman for Possession

This release was provided by the Springfield Police Department. DATE: 03/01/2013     TIME: 7:13 pm      LOCATION: Route 22 East Officer Anthony Reimer was exiting a convenience store on Route 22 just as a vehicle parked in a space in front of the store. Through the open driver's window of the car the officer detected the strong and pungent odor of what was believed to be raw Marijuana. A subsequent investigation resulted in the arrest of Nicole Vacula, age 27 of Kenilworth, a passenger in the vehicle. She was charged with the Possession of under 50 gms of Marijuana and was later released with initial court appearance date in the Springfield Municipal Court.

Police Charge Newark Man With Hindering Apprehension

DATE: 02/26/2013     TIME: 10:46 pm    LOCATION: Route 22 East Officers Anthony Reimer and Ercan Sidar observed a 2002 Mercury SUV parked in the lot of TGI Friday's Restaurant and a small side window of the vehicle was broken out. When the officers checked the license plate on the vehicle they found it was registered to a 1994 Pontiac sedan. When the operator, Jaliyl Norman, age 37, of Newark, was asked about the license plates not matching the vehicle he claimed he had not yet registered it and borrowed the plates from a friend. When asked for ID, Norman claimed to have left his wallet at home and gave verbal identity information while also claiming he had a valid driver …

Springfield Police Catch Teen Driving a Stolen Car With No License

DATE: 02/26/2013     TIME: 3:27 am   LOCATION: Route 22 West Officer Robert Bertucci was running radar on Route 22 West and stopped a motor vehicle for traveling 67 MPH in a 45 MPH zone. As the car's license plate was called into police HQ's it was found that the red 2006 Ford SUV was a stolen vehicle that was reported stolen from North Plainfield the week before. The driver, Jade Sanders, age 18, of Plainfield, could not exhibit any ID as she claimed she had left her wallet with her NJ driver license at home.
