NJ Transit Cross-Honoring Tickets During Storm

Cross-honoring in effect through Thursday.

As the area braces for a potential three-to-five inches of tardy snow (not quite a White Christmas, but close, right?), NJ Transit announced that it would be cross-honoring of tickets starting at 1 p.m. Wednesday. Cross-honoring will remain in effect until the end of the service day Thursday, Dec. 27, enabling customers to use their ticket or pass on an alternate travel mode—rail, bus or light rail. For example, customers who normally take the bus from Rutherford to the Port Authority Bus Terminal may use their bus pass on the train from Rutherford to New York Penn Station. Similarly, customers who normally take the bus between Atlantic City and Lindenwold may use the train instead. Customers are reminded that many NJ Transit rail lines …

Typical NJ Transit. They will cross-honor tickets during the storm. They should do that all the time! There shouldn't be a difference between having a bus ticket or a rail ticket, it's all going to the same pocket- NJ Transit. It would be helpful if NJT would, at some point, let customers know what their travel options are if rail is out. For example, if service goes out on the Morris & Essex …   more ›

5 Inches of Snow Possible; Travel 'Treacherous' Wednesday

Areas close to New York City could see flooding, National Weather Service reports.

Santa may have left plenty of goodies under the tree, but Mother Nature is about to leave a mess outside in Northern New Jersey. According to the National Weather Service, Morris, Passaic and Bergen counties can expect anywhere from three to five inches of snow to blanket the area, with precipitation first appearing between 1 and 4 p.m. Wednesday afternoon. Compounding the snowfall, meteorologist David Stark said, is the potential of up to a quarter-inch of ice. The storm, which may also bring wind gusts of up to 45 miles per hour, won’t lighten up until sunrise on Thursday, Stark said. Essex and Union counties can expect more of a freezing rain and rain mix, which may begin as snowfall, Stark said. Those areas could also see mild to …

Sandy Post Mortem: The Police Department

Department heads examine their responses to the storm.

The first 90 minutes of the Springfield Township Committee meeting on Tuesday, Nov. were devoted to a review of Springfield’s response to Sandy. The consensus among department heads and officials was that lessons from the previous year’s major disruptive weather events, Irene and the October Snowstorm, where learned and applied, but that additional resources were needed to prepare the township for future storms. The departments all noted that storage and procurement of fuel and generators presented a challenge in the storm and would factor heavily in planning for coming storms. Springfield Police Chief John Cook said that for the police department, dealing with Sandy required extensive planning as well as improvised solutions.  With the …

I agree with you. I obeyed the travel ban and walked mostly around the north end of town. Police presence was notable, but I'm surprised that Chief Cook didn't mention the auxiliary police. I saw some of the same ones every single day. We are very lucky to have volunteers like these.   more ›

Springfield Public Schools to Close on Monday and Tuesday

Schools continue to be closed due to Hurricane Sandy.

After five days of staying at home without power, many Springfield students have taken to social media to express their surprising dissapointment at the lack of school.  Unfortunately, their patience is going to be tested further.  Springfield School officials announced today that schools would be closed on Monday, Nov. 5 and Tuesday, Nov. 6. Springfield Schools Superintendent Michael Davino said that the schools will open as soon as possible.  "We don't have any information that says we will have power before Wednesday," Davino said.  He said that plans to make up the missed school days were not yet set.

NJ DEP: Post Sandy Water Guidelines

State agency advises residents to conserve water after the storm.

The following is a release from the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection. ---------------------- The Department of Environmental Protection is strongly advising residents statewide to conserve water in the wake of Hurricane Sandy because widespread power outages have forced many public and private water utilities to use emergency generators to treat and pump water. “Power companies are working hard to restore electricity to water utilities, but right now it’s impossible to say how long these facilities will have to be operated on backup generators,” Commissioner Martin said. “Everyone must pitch in immediately and take steps to reduce water consumption.  Without conservation now, homes and businesses could find themselves …
