Surfers and fishermen outnumbered beach walkers on many beaches Saturday evening as Hurricane Sandy approached offshore. These surfers and fishermen were at the beach in Bay Head, which is under mandatory state orders to evacuate by 4 p.m. Sunday.

Officials prepare for storm.
With Sandy expected to make landfall in New Jersey on Sunday, Springfield officials, employees and emergency responders gathered in town hall to discuss plans for handling the storm on Friday, Oct. 26. While the impact of the storm is uncertain, Springfield departments have taken stock of their supplies and equipment and prepared to mobilize their resources. Both last year’s Tropical Storm Irene and the October snowstorm factored into the plans, with department heads looking to shore up areas of town most impacted during the 2011 emergencies. Stresses storm may knock out power for 7-10 days
Jersey Central Power and Light (JCP&L) President Don Lynch says the company has learned from the mistakes it made from Hurricane Irene and is ready for Hurricane Sandy and the threat it poses to the state. The company took heat when Hurricane Irene left many New Jersey towns without power for days - and, in some cases, weeks. Many thought JCP&L's response was too slow. The biggest lesson learned is getting the information out to customers and municipalities as specifically, quickly and often as possible, Lynch said. The company wants its customers to know as much information as possible, he said. The following was released by Union County at 1 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 26. -------------- With Hurricane Sandy still on track to hit the Union County area by Monday, the Freeholder Board is urging residents to take steps to prepare this weekend. “Union County will be at the ready with personnel and equipment, and everyone can help our community get through this safely by taking a few simple steps,” said Freeholder Chairman Alexander Mirabella. Parts of New Jersey may see hazardous weather conditions this week and into next week as Hurricane Sandy makes its way to the U.S., according to the National Weather Service. "(Hurricane) Sandy is slowly gathering strength south-southwest of Jamaica. The current forecast track has Sandy passing over Jamaica Wednesday afternoon as a hurricane, then near or over eastern Cuba Wednesday night. Winds have already begun to increase in and around the Florida Peninsula, especially over the coastal waters where Small Craft Advisories and Tropical Storm Watches are in effect," the NWS said.
