The Springfield Farmers market opened for business on Monday, July 2, with returning businesses as well as new vendors. The market will be open every week on Mondays from noon to 6 p.m in July and August at the Dayton parking lot. The market moves to Ruby Park when school reopens in September. In addition to farmers' market staples like fruit and vegetables, Springfield residents can pick up barbecue and other specialty food and food items. In a formal ceremony, Springfield firefighters David Maas and Michael Mastroeni were sworn in as Captains at the Township Committee meeting on Tuesday, June 26 Township Committee meeting. A look back at the notable goings on in the township in recent days.
The big story in Springfield this week was the reaction to the proposed changes to the township Board of Health. Under the proposed changes, the board, currently composed of seven volunteers appointed by the Township Committee, would be replaced by a board of health made up of Township Committee members and two residents with public health backgrounds. The issue took up the lion's share of Mayor Ziad Shehady's Message from the Mayor, where he argued that the board's autonomy was not an inherent virture. He said that having the Township Committee absorb the board's functions would streamline processes and create efficiencies. Springfield sold and sweet treatery the Ice Hut partnered with the Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation to raise money to fight childhood cancer after reading a story on Alexandra “Alex” Scott. Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF) emerged from the front yard lemonade stand of cancer patient Alexandra “Alex” Scott (1996-2004). In 2000, 4-year-old Alex announced she wanted to hold a lemonade stand to raise money to help find a cure for all children with cancer. Since then, the Foundation bearing her name has evolved into a national fundraising movement, complete with thousands of volunteers across the country carrying on her legacy of hope. Springfield celebrated Memorial Day with a parade and ceremony. Local officials, community groups, emergency response professionals and volunteers marched outside of Town Hall. Patch editor Adam Bulger and photographer Peter Cook were on hand to capture the day in pictures. To coincide with the day of remembrance for fallen soldiers, we featured the efforts of local veteran Art Weintraub to collect money for and draw attention to wounded special forces soldiers. Springfield residents Karen Bonacorda and Julie Powell shared powerful personal stories with Patch readers this week. Bonacorda, a Marion Ave. resident whose home suffered extensive damage from tropical storm Irene, helped reinvigorate the membership of Springfield’s Community …

Fire fighters and emergency responders from Springfield and neighboring towns packed into the town hall meeting room to see Carlo Palumbo promoted to Deputy Chief of the township's fire department. Palumbo, a longtime member of the department, has had a distinguished career as a firefighter in Springfield. As one of the initial wave of responders to 9/11, he was among 10 Springfield fire fighters to spend 36 hours covering a Staten Island Fire house whose crew had rushed to respond to the Towers. Earlier this month, he was one of three Springfield firefighters to receive the New Jersey State F.M.B.A. EMS Medal of Distinction for his part in an emergency childbirth outside of a bank.
