Many residents of Union County, N.J., emerged largely unscathed from Hurricane Sandy, but coastal areas of the county saw major damage from the tidal surge. County government spokesman Sebastian D'Elia told The Huffington Post that Sandy had brought the county's worst storm. "This is easily the most devastation we've seen," D'Elia said. D'Elia pointed to the destruction of the marina at the Port of Elizabeth, saying the tidal surge left the marina "pretty much gone. Boats have been scattered, and homes near the marina have been damaged. The following is press release from Union County. ---------------------- The Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders has issued the following updates and alerts for Union County residents: “So far it appears that Union County has come through the worst of the storm without loss of life and we are grateful for that,” said Freeholder Vice Chairman Linda Carter. “However, conditions remain hazardous with numerous downed power lines and trees blocking streets, and flooding in some areas. Proclamation states that only emergency vehicles allowed on streets.
It's official: get off of Springfield's roads. Following a meeting of township emergency responders, elected officials and department heads, Springfield announced that the Township is officially under a state of emergency. The emergency proclamation prohibits non-emergency vehicles from driving on Springfield roads begining at 6 p.m., Oct. 29. According to the proclamation, the traffic ban is meant to allow police and other emergency vehicles access to township areas under emergency conditions. In addition, the proclamation grants Springfield police the authority to remove cars that are obstructing emergency traffic. Officials urge residents to stay in a safe and secure place at this time. It is labeled Hurricane Sandy and may make landfall with heavy rain and wind. You may want to encourage your citizens to check all pumps, chain saws, generators, and other emergency equipment.
