Ambitious Plans for Downtown Springfield Unveiled Architects, designers and attorneys presented Springfield officials with plans for Springfield's Morris Ave. business district that looked markedly different from the downtown that exists today. The presentation, which officials and developers stressed was an early draft, showed a bright and modern urban shopping area teeming with pedestrians and lit by sunlight. Fall for Springfield Festival Springfield once again celebrated its annual fall festival. Car Crashes into Morris Ave. Home On Monday, Oct. 1, a car crashed into a Morris Avenue home, sending two people to the hospital, including a small child. Emergency responders said an elderly driver lost control of his vehicle. Reportedly swaying the vehicle as he drove the one-way street, the driver lost control and spun into a single family home. A 9-month-old girl and her mother were injured by falling debris from the impact. Springfield FD Raise Awareness and Money for Breast Cancer Research Throughout October, members of the Springfield Fire Department have swapped their standard issue blue work shirts for ones with pink ones in support of a nationwide campaign to raise money and awareness for breast cancer. The most recent Springfield Township Committee meeting coincided with the eleventh anniversary of September 11. Springfield officials marked the anniversary by starting the Committee meeting with a prayer and a remembrance. First Presbyterian Church Minister Victoria Ney read a non denominational prayer asking God for healing and peace, saying "Give us peace, your Shalom." Following the prayer, officials spoke on the significance of the day. Committee member Rich Huber, who spoke first, recounted his personal experience of escaping from inside the World Trade Center during the attacks with his normally sonorous voice became shaky as he spoke. In a development years in the making, Springfield broke ground on the turf field athletic complex outside of Dayton High School this week. Officials, students and residents gathered on Friday, Sept. 7 to ceremonially mark the start of construction on the field. This November, Springfield residents can decide if they feel the township needs a new form of government. The election ballot will include a question asking whether Springfield should assemble a five members to study Springfield’s form of government and make recommendations on the government’s future. Countywide The Union County Homicide Task Force has been continuing work on the investigation into the death of Vera Pecoraro while also working two other active homicide investigations in the county – the shooting death of a Linden teen and the stabbing of a 17-year-old during a large fight in Rahway. Clark Matthew Dorsi, lawyer for Michael and Theodore Pecoraro, says the two are fully cooperating with the investigation into their mother's homicide. Vera Pecoraro was found with her throat slit on Saturday at her home on Rolling Hill Way in Clark. Police say there was no sign of forced entry into the home and they believe she knew her attacker. The Township Committee meeting where the vote on the Board of Health took place was punctuated by frustration and anger by officials, township volunteers and residents. Springfield Mayor Ziad Shehady repeatedly stopped the meeting to admonish spectators for heckling. The spectators bristled at officials’ statements, accusing them of rudeness and unprofessional behavior in comments and exclamations. The Springfield B’nai B’rith recently honored Bruce H. Bergen of Springfield. In presenting Bergen with the lodge’s prestigious Citizenship and Civic Affairs Award at the group’s 56th annual dinner dance at Temple Beth Ahm Yisrael in Springfield B’nai B’rith president Joseph Tenenbaum characterized Bergen as “dedicated and compassionate.” …

The Springfield Farmers market opened for business on Monday, July 2, with returning businesses as well as new vendors. The market will be open every week on Mondays from noon to 6 p.m in July and August at the Dayton parking lot. The market moves to Ruby Park when school reopens in September. In addition to farmers' market staples like fruit and vegetables, Springfield residents can pick up barbecue and other specialty food and food items. In a formal ceremony, Springfield firefighters David Maas and Michael Mastroeni were sworn in as Captains at the Township Committee meeting on Tuesday, June 26 Township Committee meeting. Countywide West Nile virus was detected in mosquito pools in three towns: Summit, Cranford and Clark. Officials detailed efforts to combat the virus — found in four pools out of 63 tested throughout the county — and shared tips for residents. Clark Health Officer Nancy Raymond says the finding is not especially alarming and that there have been positive tests in the township in previous years. Cranford Firefighters from Cranford and surrounding towns battled a 4-alarm fire in a Cranford residence on Sunday afternoon through evening. See the video here. Springfield celebrated Memorial Day with a parade and ceremony. Local officials, community groups, emergency response professionals and volunteers marched outside of Town Hall. Patch editor Adam Bulger and photographer Peter Cook were on hand to capture the day in pictures. To coincide with the day of remembrance for fallen soldiers, we featured the efforts of local veteran Art Weintraub to collect money for and draw attention to wounded special forces soldiers. Springfield residents Karen Bonacorda and Julie Powell shared powerful personal stories with Patch readers this week. Bonacorda, a Marion Ave. resident whose home suffered extensive damage from tropical storm Irene, helped reinvigorate the membership of Springfield’s Community …

Each week, Patch takes a look back at the news in Union County for the past week. Countywide Hot on the heals of the U.S. News & World Report rankings, Newsweek released its list of the best public high schools in the country, and Union County high schools did quite well. New Providence ranked 224 and Governor Livingston High came in at 498 out of the 1,000 schools that made the grade. Elsewhere around Union County's public schools, Elizabeth High School ranked 217, Summit ranked 251, Cranford ranked 279, Westfield High ranked 352, Jonathan Dayton ranked 584, A.L. Johnson ranked 820 and Scotch Plains/Fanwood ranked 769. Clark Matthew Kent, a 2007 Arthur L. Johnson graduate, was found dead at his home on Hawthorne Drive in Clark on Thursday…

I've watched the TC meetings on cable and I am not impressed. The 'mayor' only gets to chair a meeting, not issue orders to the public or other TC members. Before we moved away the first time back around 1993, I was at TC meetings to ask about the town's affordable housing plan.
