NJ Transit Cross-Honoring Tickets During Storm

Cross-honoring in effect through Thursday.

As the area braces for a potential three-to-five inches of tardy snow (not quite a White Christmas, but close, right?), NJ Transit announced that it would be cross-honoring of tickets starting at 1 p.m. Wednesday. Cross-honoring will remain in effect until the end of the service day Thursday, Dec. 27, enabling customers to use their ticket or pass on an alternate travel mode—rail, bus or light rail. For example, customers who normally take the bus from Rutherford to the Port Authority Bus Terminal may use their bus pass on the train from Rutherford to New York Penn Station. Similarly, customers who normally take the bus between Atlantic City and Lindenwold may use the train instead. Customers are reminded that many NJ Transit rail lines …

Typical NJ Transit. They will cross-honor tickets during the storm. They should do that all the time! There shouldn't be a difference between having a bus ticket or a rail ticket, it's all going to the same pocket- NJ Transit. It would be helpful if NJT would, at some point, let customers know what their travel options are if rail is out. For example, if service goes out on the Morris & Essex …   more ›

Town Hall Menorah Poll Results

Poll shows support for a Menorah outside of Town Hall, but comments show concerns.

While a majority of Springfield residents in Springfield Patch's informal poll said they favored having a Menorah outside of the municipal building as part of the the township's holiday celebration, a significant minority oppose the measure and several commenters voiced reservations about adding an overt religious symbol to the Springfield holiday display.  Of the 87 votes in the poll, 63 respondents favored having a Menorah dispay and 24 opposed. In addition to voting in the poll, several readers took to the comments to debate the Menorah.  While the Menorah would be fitting of the town in light of its considerable Jewish population, readers worry that the Menorah would be too overt of a religious symbol. Several readers drew a …

Firefighters offered public refreshments at annual holiday celebration.

This year, members of Springfield Fire Department FMBA Local 57 continued their annual tradition handing out hot chocolate and doughnuts at the township's annual tree lighting. Thanks go out to Springfield Fire Chief James Sanford for providing the photo.

2012 Holiday Tree Lighting to be Bigger Than Ever

Earlier start time and additional attractions for this year’s holiday ceremony.

Santa is again coming to Springfield. And this year, he’s bringing a bag stuffed with new attractions. The annual municipal tree lighting ceremony, set for Sunday, Dec. 2, will feature its traditional mainstays of lighting the tree, a dramatic Santa appearance and children singing holiday songs. But this year, the event has been supersized with new features, including a petting zoo, hayrides and more. “After last year, the office staff and I discussed all year about expanding the event a bit,” Springfield recreation director Mike Tennaro said in an email, adding that they were looking “to create a better community event for all to enjoy."  The tree lighting will again be held outside town hall at Town Hall Lawn and North Trivett Avenue. In…

Pictures: Springfield in Snow

There is a whole lotta white going on.

Got snow pics? Send them over or upload them to the site. We got in a new batch of pics last night. Seems like everybody's yard is piled high. Snow is piling up and plows are working overtime. Tree branches are nearly toppling from the weight. Patch contributor Lou Monaco braved the elements last nights to get some night time action shots. Be sure to check them out.

Sledding In and Around Springfield: A User's Guide

In anticipation of this weekend's snowfall, here's a guide to the best places around for kids to slip down slopes.

Besides making more trips to the gym this year, and trying out Sofia's, the new Italian restaurant on Morris Ave.,  one of my goals this year is to embrace the present. For winter, that means dealing with the cold and making the best of it. And that means sledding!  Ok, so only one of the three kids actually like it, but what is a family without the challenges of differing ages and conflicting opinions? My absolute favorite place to go sledding is Echo Lake (Mountainside) off Mill Road.  Why? Too Steep? Try Briant Park in nearby Summit bordering Springfield. One mom told me she prefers this with her little ones.  I've talked about Bryant Park in my Bundle up and Walk post, earlier.  Need a Bigger Hill? South Mountain is steeper, and if you…

Actually, Briant part is part in Summit and part in Springfield, as mentioned here: http://home.att.net/~briantpark/ and easily confirmed on Zillow (best site I know for seeing town borders). Although I do believe the place where kids sled is in Summit.   more ›

JDHS Students Enjoy Their Winter Break

Dayton Students give their opinion about Winter Break

During winter break, students get a chance to relax, meet up with friends, celebrate the holidays and catch up with schoolwork. Sophomore Francisco Mena loves winter break. "The week before winter break this year was crazy, a lot of tests and quizzes, which made the break so much better," Mena said."I use this time to catch up with friends and family." Some of his favorite things to do while away from school are seeing movies and going to the mall with friends, shopping for holiday gifts,  going to parties. Most of all, he caught up on sleep. "It's nice to get some time off from school to clear my mind and not have to wake up at 6:45 a.m.," he said. Alexa McCaffrey, also a sophomore, uses break as a time to clear her mind. "I mainly just …

Fewer New Jersey Residents to Travel for Holidays

AAA predicts a dip in holiday traveling.

More than 2 million New Jersey residents will travel for the holidays, which is less than the number of people who traveled last year. AAA, which has a branch in Springfield, expects a 2.6 percent decrease in the number of people traveling this holiday season compared to 2008. Nationally, however, more people will be traveling at least 50 miles between Dec. 23 and Jan. 3. AAA projects 87.7 million Americans will travel, a 3.8 percent increase, which the agency says is the largest projected increase for any major holiday this year. "Although New Jersey travel is expected to decrease year-over-year, it's important to note that two million Garden State residents are expected to travel," said Rick Zeckendorf, vice president of travel service …
