Former auxiliary officer and son of celebrated auxiliary officer becomes fulltime cop.
This week, the Springfield Police Department welcomed a familiar face to the force. Springfield Police Chief John Cook and Mayor Ziad Shehady swore in Ercan Sidar as a Probationary Officer at the Springfield Township Committee meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 19. Since December, 2011, Sidar has served the police department as Special Law Enforcement Officer and volunteered with the township's Auxiliary Police. But he was well known with the town's public safety professionals and volunteers before putting on either uniform. His late father, Tony Sidar, was a longtime, decorated member of Springfield’s Auxiliary police squad. Son of the late and much-loved member of the auxiliary police force sworn in at Township Committee meeting.
Ercan Sidar is following in his father’s footsteps and blazing new trails of his own. Like his late father, the 22-year-old Springfield resident volunteers as a member of the Springfield Auxiliary Squad. But as of this week, Sidar is taking on a new role. Surrounded by his family, Sidar was sworn in as a Special Law Enforcement Officer Class 2 by Springfield Police Chief John Cook. As a Special Law Enforcement Officer Class 2, Sidar will have all the same responsibilities as a part time police officer. First Chief since 2009 and a sign of stability for department with recent public troubles.
To the resounding applause of a packed room, Springfield’s Township Committee unanimously voted in favor of naming John Cook the Township’s first chief of police in two years. Cook was sworn into office surrounded by his children, Vincent, Marissa, Cheyenna and Morgan. A large crowd of police officers, firefighters, former officials and high-ranking representatives from Union County were on hand to congratulate Cook. A long receiving line of well-wishers snaked through Town Hall after the ceremony, attesting to Cook’s popularity in the department and with other public safety agencies.
